I use the small tip shuvel.....id love somethibg hand held that's sharp and can dig.....do I have to order something like this from kellyco or can I find a good tool similar at a harware store ? Any advice ? Thx
If you want the best, order from Predator Tools, makers of the Lesche digger. I have the model 85 and model 58. They will last you forever. Buy once and forget it!!
I tried several hardware store garden trowels at 6 to 8 bucks each and with their aluminum blades, they all broke after a few weeks. I was in Menards (similar to a Home Depot, in case you're not familiar with them) and found one in theirr garden center, a "Yardworks". It has a serrated right edge, and a forked sharp tip. This one cost less than 5 and has lasted a whole summer. It has a stainless steel blade and will hod an edge lots better than aluminum will. I just never could justify spending 50 to 100 bucks for a digger. That money was better spent on my sniper coil and ProPointer.
Check out the A.M. leonard soil knife. Been using mine for 2 years now and sure it will last many more. Cost is about 28.00 with a heavy leather sheath. amleo.com is the website.
I agree Big Cat Daddy, If I dig most everything to get the good stuff, I think the best digging tool is money well spent. I have the same ones you have.
I use this tool, which I bought from Amazon for about $30. It is a stainless steel Japanese landscaping tool called a hori-hori. It has a serrated edge on one side that works great for cutting tree roots, and the back of the blade is marked to measure mm and inches.
Andrew, I have used just about everything offered by Lowe's or home depot, and also purchased a stainless hori-hori digger. I finally broke down and purchased a lesche, (got it from evilbay for about $37 shipped) and I must say, I wouldn't want to be without it now. The blade is offset from the handle, and when I first picked it up, I felt like it was going to be difficult to use. After using it for just a short time, I found that the hand guard helps you punch through really tough ground, and they are bulletproof. I recently decided that it was time to buy a new one, so I intentionally tried to break my original one by prying roots. Long story short, I still have my original lesche, and it doesn't look like I'll be buying a new one out of necessity in the near future. Now of course, this is my personal opinion, and with current inflation, is worth a next to nothing. Happy Hunting!
Darren
I like the Predator knife. But I LOVE this digger. Been using one for 1.5 years. It goes deep. Pulls up tons of soil. Softer handle for flipping the plug over. It goes through lots of roots too.
