I need a camera

I have a couple choices. I want a digital w/macros for close-ups of minerals and such. I don't want to spend over $300.00 (I know, I'm cheap). Any suggestions?

Nikon Coolpix S500 or the Canon A570

In my opinion, the Nikon has the best Macro.

Thanks! After going to the site above, I have pretty much decide on the Canon PowerShot A710 IS. Any thoughts?

It's a nice camera. I have the A620 and like your 710, the macro sucks by comparison to Nikon. My Nikon S5 is an Ultra Compact, similar to the one I recommended, and it has an astounding macro. Regardless, I still shoot the A620 more than the Nikon S5. The 720 is a good camera and the fact it takes AA batteries is probably a bonus.

Since I need the camera for shooting minerals and gems, the macros are the most important setting for me. So, since you say the nikon's are better, I'll go with you and get that one instead. Thank you very much for your time and help!
