I may have been wrong about the Sovereigns

I finally braved a couple of short hunts with the Elite at some iron infested ghost town sites. Nothing great but I learned a few things. I had never used my Sovereigns that I had in the past for this type of hunting because of the slow recovery speed but I have to tell you I may have been wrong about the Sovereigns when hunting in iron. Even though I was bombarded with a symphony of blurps, bleeps and blaps and constant nulling I inched my way along and it didn't take long for it to click in my head what I needed to listen to was the threshold changes more than the main signal. When working a so-so signal it was the threshold that alerted me that there may be something else in the mix. It wasn't always a good target but it did add some additional goodies I missed on many prior hunts at these same sites. The Indian Head with the rust spot was in the same hole with a big rusty nail. As I slowly worked the signal from different angles the threshold return would sometimes change from a low iron buzz to a high buzz depending on the angle. All the coins where close to iron and had to be worked real slow from different angles to get a signal worth digging. I don't think the Sovereign will be my main detector for iron infested sites because it's extremely slow hunting and you have to really work each questionable signal which there are a lot of at these type of sites but I will be using it a lot this winter at some of my older hunted sites along with some old saltwater dock sites. I really like the Elite so I might just pick up a 180 meter and use it at some old parks where I usually grab my Whites XL Pro.

There gets a point where you get to know those trash signals and all that sound a little differnt will get you attention so you stop and start working these a little more and see some interesting item and those in with iron. Just stay with it and you will learn more everytime out with it and you may find you will love those iron sites as you will be picking out coins others have missed for years. The secret is going slow so it can see the iron and the good items..

Good luck and hope to see more post like this one from you.

Rick

Thanks Rick. I'm putting in more time with the Sovereign this round than in the past and I'm discovering it's more versatile than I thought. I never really gave them a fair chance before. My first Sovereign which I bought from you many years ago was only used a few times because I couldn't get use to the tones even though it was a deep machine. Do you think running in auto would be better in thick iron? I usually run my sensitivity between 12:00 and 1:00 in cleaner ground with the S-8 but dropped it down to close to 4:00 thinking it would cut down on possible falsing from larger iron. Coins here are 5-6 inches deep at most.
