I may have a problem with........

Old Katz

I may have a problem with the speaker on my MXT.
I notice when I bring the coil arcoss the targets I'm
getting a vibration in the speaker sometimes. It almost
sounds like when you have the volumn set too high on
your home stereo speakers. ANyone ever have this
happen with their MXT?

Until reading your post I had not paid any mind to speaker.I got my unit out and used a micrometer to check hole size .085 (In comparison a common toothpick at it thickest is .080)there are 34 holes in the pattern,my thought is its going to be common to have dirt particles in the unit.I'm thinking turn the unit top side down and use air duster to blow dirt out,use short blast. The air duster was intended for this purpose so no need to worry about hurting anything.I've not experienced this problem but the solution seems feasible

I have mine taped over and only use heaphones - no problem.

If it's a large shallow object; you may be over driving the speaker; there is probably a limited on the headset.

I'm with BB. Tape and phones.

>Over driving the Speaker.<

Thanks. I was reaching for words to describe the situation. Your way of saying it helps.

I accidently dropped the MXT awhile back. I didn't have the arm cup attached; that velcro band
wasn't attched to my arm. It was a bit akward but I didn't change the siituation. I lost my grip
on the machine and down she went. The Headset Cord helped break the fall; it was kind of like
a bundgy effect, but the control box still bumped the ground a good one. I'm thinking I may have
knocked the control volumn out of wack or the speaker out of wack.

Now when the coil passes over the target sometimes I'm getting that vibration in the speaker like
it was being "over driven."

Actually I just thought of something while writing this, It may be in the headset. I'll try it again without
the head set being connected and see how it all works out.

I'm thinking it may not be any big deal. Maybe just something I can learn to live with?

after reading this post and looking at the situation I called sweet home this morning and talked with a tech because I wondered if the speaker holes also acted as vent for the machine components, he gave me the BarberBill solution.Hope your mxt is gonna be OK Old Katz! I'm gonna find me a sticker to place over the speaker holes just to make sure the dirt stays out.

hope your mxt is OK

I hunt without the velcro band too, I think it makes me lose lot of time

This may be odd...

MY MXT came with a STICKER over the holes....

It's a round, black "white's" sticker with "whites detectors" and the logo in white lettering...

Anyone ELSE have that?

I got mine about two years ago...

I had the same problem thought it was dirt etc. I sent it back to Whites and they found that the headphone jack is noted to loosen up on the pc board they fixed it no charge. Hope this helps. The MXT is noted for loose headphone jacks.

Did you buy a used or rebuilt detector? That is a common, though unnecessary, addition some people do to keep dirt, moisture and other foreign objects out of the speaker that they don't use anyway. BTW, the speaker has a plastic cone and is water and dust resistant.
