I love finding nickels, even if they look like play money!!

I knew it was going to be my lucky day when took my Ace 250, turned it on, picked out my program, set all my settings and ground balanced. Low and behold there by the coil was a four leaf clover.
We are having a heat wave and I am going MD'ing even if it keeps raining. This place was demo out over two years ago and a buddy of mine said he cleaned it out with his XLT. He got out of detecting before I moved here. Fine with me, this is my empire and I have it all to myself. I haven't ever seen anyone else MD'ing in this town and I have been here 9 months.
After they tore down the buildings you can see town. I haven't gotten any coins in the 1800's for a while and all the older coins seem to be on this end of the street.

First good sign, 1919 dime.

This was a gold plated pin. The backing came off and was in the same hole. Have no idea what was on the front.

LOOK I FOUND PLAY MONEY!!

That is what I thought at first. It may have been in a fire. It has smears of metal on it. The last # is a 2. So that means it is either 1872 or 1882. I pretty sure 1882.

1921, 1927, 1944 and 1946 wheat's. R P 380 auto bullet, Some of the stuff I bring home to check out better. I found a stainless steel spoon and all kinds of trash. I was hoping to find some more good stuff after 5 hours of MD'ing.

Very nice, how deep was nickle and or deepest target?

Nickel was about 4". It was setting on a piece of broken concrete. I dug some targets 6"+. Sometimes I get a good sound once. I go to pp and center it up. I swing over it again and if I can get a good sound out of it every once in a while. I dig it. That is how I get the deeper stuff. I would miss a lot if I didn't do it that way. I believe deeper is better. I am not after clad, I am after old. My coin count shows that.

I hope you are kidding, and that I don't look like a sucker. But, That nickle is not play money. It is a US shielded nickle minted in the 1800's

You are going to be surprised:surprised:

Good finds with your ace

I know everybody is use to pictures. I should have put  beside the statement,"LOOK I FOUND PLAY MONEY!!"

This is what I said next,"That is what I thought at first. It may have been in a fire. It has smears of metal on it. The last # is a 2. So that means it is either 1872 or 1882. I pretty sure 1882."

When it had mud on it I could barely see the coin. You know play money has the number in the middle and stars around the outer edge.:stars:

What no marbles? Those shield nickels have the smallest dates of about any US coin. I have had my old nickels soaking in olive oil for about 2-3 months now. I am hoping it removes some of the effects of being buried for so long. I plan to take them out around the first of the year.

Do you keep all that ammo? I have mine in a big jar now. Started out as a tiny little bottle.
Nice digs! You have me beat by either 5 or 15 years on the nickel! My oldest nickel is 1887.

WTG!!
Yes, but it is only time, as I have seen some of your old finds. Because of the early population of your area, your chances are better for finding older coins. I have had good quantity, but the quality has been poor.
Have you tried soaking your coins in diesel fuel?

Bill
No I never heard of that one. I don't think my wife would be happy with that stuff in the apartment.

Bill
No I never heard of that one. I don't think my wife would be happy with that stuff in the apartment.
I wouldn't try it either. I would think it would get into the pores of the metal and the coin would forever smell like diesel.
