Just a quick thought or 2. I'm fairly new at this, and already have owned the following detectors. Garrett Ace 250, Tesoro Silver uMax, Tesoro Cortes, Minelab Xterra 705, ( didnt use it at all, to confusing for me), and the Fisher F2. So far, without a doubt, The F2 is smokin!, simple to use, a real coin magnet, the only detector so far that could tell a pull tab from a nickel!, ----- a great little machine, I picked up more dimes and quarters today than I have with all the others combined. Hardly any trash at all. By combining the readout #, the depth, and the sound, it is pretty easy to get a real good idea what's beneath the surface. I was using the small, 4.5"? coil, and pinpointing is not even necessary. Dead under the center, everytime. ----- Same holds true for the 8"coil, haven't tried to biggest one yet. Seperation is simply awesome!!! I never would have believed that such a good detector was available at such a cheap price. No doubt which one I'll be recommending:usmc: --------Don't get me wrong, I am not bad mouthing any of the other brands, ( the UPS man is bringing me a Garrett 2500 tomorrow), I only hope that I like it as much as the Fisher, or it'll be on E-bay next week. No more clad collectors for me, What's your thoughts on the F5????? Thanks everyone, TTF

quite an arsenal for only just starting out-how many vehicles do you have?I use aF5 --those fishers are good machine, how do you like the Tesoro?

Frankly speaking, you're making a big mistake. Detectors are not things to be collected, they are to collect stuff hidden in ground. Having 5 or 6 different devices isn't the best approach to the subject. Get one decent detector and become master of its usage. Then get another one which possibly works good in different conditions (eg. one for picking coins from trashy sites and second for deeply buried relics).
Good detector is not enough. It's just a piece of success. You'll need also luck and knowledge. Plus - which is the most important factor - you have to know your detector very well, constatntly improve and master technique of using it effectively. You'll need hundereds of hours spent on detecting to say, that you know your detector well. Trust me, the Xterra705 is way better than the F2, the same applies to the Cortes. But there's a learning curve. Get focused on 1-2 detectors, that's my advice.

Kind regards,
Michal

I feel like the Tesoros are good at finding things, but not good at telling you what they are. Good discrimination, hits hard on coins, and tabs. The Cortes assigns a # of 95 to all US coins of copper cent or better. I would like more info. I am already tired of digging pennies, yes I will miss some good items, but that's OK with me. I'm doing this for fun, not to make a living. --- As far as vehicles go, - Ford F150, + Ford F150 Harley Edition, + Toyota Camry, + 09 Harley FLHX

i love my f2 hot little fun unit :detecting: hard unit to beat
have fun

Since you seemingly want to try another detector, you won't go wrong with any of the F series, period! Which ever one you do settle on, do spend some time with it, enough to get to know what it will actually do. I have a F 75, but if I didn't want to spring for the price of an F 75, I would go with the F 5 and again, get to know it real well. Good luck and HH jim tn

wich one of the F-series would you guys say are about equal to the x-terra 705?

I have the F2 myself and I am very happy with it. I was looking at the x-terra 70 before, but decided to try a cheaper model first to see if this hobby is for me. Now I know. I try to use it as much as possible, without upsetting the wife too much :)
