I have had several times recently where I've ID'd a coin, and had it show about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way down the depth meter (maybe 3-4 inches deep). Then, I'd dig it, and it would be VERY shallow. I stumbled upon the reason. When trying to coax a good ID number out of a target using the slow "Minelab wiggle," the depth is not calibrated properly. Once you get a good ID with the wiggle, DO NOT check the depth meter while still doing the wiggle -- it will show a shallow target MUCH deeper than it really is. Once you have narrowed down the ID and location of the target using the wiggle, then use a bit broader, and faster, sweep speed. Doing this, on a shallow target, you will see the depth meter change to show the "shallowness" of the target. If the depth meter does not change, but stays roughly the same, when you switch to the faster/broader sweeps, then you are NOT dealing with a shallow target.
Hopefully this saves someone else some confusion! Wish I would have known it earlier!
