the spoked 8X9 coil 'looks' new and exciting. It also can cost more to produce, and if you use coil covers (I don't) they can be a pain to remove at times. The 8X9 coil is easier to use if you surf hunt and work the coil in the water. Also, if you beach hunt and scrub the search coil (which we shouldn't do), the sand won't pile up on it like it can/does on the solid coil.
The round 8" concentric coils were good, in my opinion, early on. I am referring to the early open-center WHITE colored coils. They were thinner than the brown coils, seemed to weigh a little less, and 9 out of 10 that I got and compared were a little 'hotter' or more sensitivity, better performing, than the brown open-center 8" coils.
I don't have a major problem pinpointing with either the 8X9 or open 8", but I know many people I talk with prefer the pinpointing abilities of the 8" coils. They also say the 8" coisl 'feel' and 'balance' better to them than the spoked 8X9 coils. Some have remarked that they get slightly better depth with the 8" coils. Overall, I pretty much agree from my results when comparing them,
Let's also note that the new Outlaw is offered with three search coils, the middle-side 'standard' coil is a white colored round 8" design. I think that was a good move.
