THANKS Dave! I got it down and according to the link you posted above above the number on it is marked ( 3917 Germany ) the link above dates it back to1881 to 1882
I would say it was for medical use.

I have had it for about 3 years.It was found in a barn that I was helping tear down . It was really rusty when I got it. Now I am on a mission to find out what it's worth
