Does anyone know what 316 is? I found a ring that is stamped 316L on the inside. It looks like white gold and has a very thin line of gold around the middle of it. What do you do to find out the different carats of gold in decimal form?

316L Stainless Steels

Molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steels which is more resistant to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corroision than the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels. This alloy also offers higher creep, stress-to-rupture and tensil strength at elevated temperature.

Well your stainless steel acid tested at 18K. I tested it a number of times and tested a 10K ring I found inbetween and the 10K tested 10K and the other ring tested 18K. I don't know what to make of it.

that 316 denotes s/s. You, yourself, said that in gold 375 is 9K so if 316 were a gold marking, it would be of a lower carat than 9 (doubtful).

This doesn't mean that some nonassayed gold of less than stamped karat value doesn't get out on the market but it still wouldn't be stamped at a value lower than 9k. India was rumoured to be a major offender in underweight gold but they have joined the rest of the gold community in using certified assayers to validate their gold.
304 and 316 are the SS designations seen most often, 304 is good for intermittent submersion in water, 316 is better for continuous submersion and still be highly rust resistant. (asked my plumber not google)

Cheers,
