i just viewed the x-terra video and am confused...

from what i have read here, when using the x-terra 50, the coil is supposed to be approximately an inch above the surface. in the video, pat watson is shown at a US beach virtually scrubbing the coil in the sand. what's up with that? is there a difference whether beach or field or lawn detecting, regarding the coil height, is concerned?

also, and perhaps pull tabs are different in the UK, tabs registered 12 on the display at a UK beach. from what has been posted, in the US, nickels read at 12. do some tabs read 12 in the US? will i get more confused looking for US nickels on UK beaches?:spin:
just clarifying things as my x-terra 50 will be coming soon.

all in all the video was informative and (slightly) amusing due to gary brun.

thanks!

I have not seen the video you mention. Without having a detector to put the information to practical use, sometimes the more we see and hear, the more confusing it becomes. My best advice would be, once you get yours, try it in the type of hunting you will be doing. With that said, I will tell you that I have found both the X-Terra 50 and the X-Terra 30 to be more stable with the coil sweeping about an inch off the ground. I don't hunt beaches. Just turf. Maybe it is the clumps of grass or clods that make it irratic when the coil bounces around. Maybe it is the space between the coil and the ground that allows for a better ground balance. I really can't say for sure. All I know is that I can make mine more stable with the coil up about an inch. As well, make sure you set the sensitivity mid-point to set the ground balance for your site. After the ground balance is set, then try tweaking up the sensitivity to maximize the performance. I know that if I have the sensitivity up too high from the start, the ground balance is tough to get right. The high tone and low tone should virtually null each other out when the GB is set correctly.
US nickels hit at either 9 or 12 for me on the X-50. Most of the pull tabs I have found where I have hunted have read 21. Yours will depend on the type of tab and the era they were produced. Different manufacturers used different styles of tabs. But again, I suggest you dig a few that are common to your area, and use them to understand the audio and visual readings they produce. Most importantly, have fun hunting and let us all know how it worked for you. HH Randy

Two things to remember about the tab result;

1. This was an early prototype (Filmed in September.)
2. It was the X-terra 30 that was being used for the test.

I haven't used a production X-terra 30 to re-test the results gained when filming. I'm sure one of the peeps using the 30 will post their findings shortly.

I wouldn't advice you waste your time searching for nickels on any UK beaches  But I did once find a silver peace dollar in the UK

Good early morning! Its 3:24 AM here in Oregon but I'll reply quickly as I am headed out the door in 20 minutes for breakfast before another day of field works with the X-Terra 50 & X-Terra 30. Going to get a female's opinions today as we hunt some sites my son and I couldn't get to yesterday. Okay, now to your post:

► My first question is, "Where are you?" pat(chicago) doesn't sound like someone concerned with UK beaches, etc.

"i just viewed the x-terra video and am confused... from what i have read here, when using the x-terra 50, the coil is supposed to be approximately an inch above the surface."... The X-Terra operator's manual states:

"It is important to keep the coil close and parallel to the ground at all times."
... and ...
"Avoid excessive brushing of the coil on the ground, as this may result in false signals and inaccurate target ID's"

Now, if you were to refer to most current manufacturer's operating manuals you will read that they suggest you search with the coil anywhere from

Hello Pat,

Old habits do indeed die hard. Plus, if those shots had been me "posing" for the camera shots for that section rather than actually doing some hunting, I'd probably have had the coil placement more in mind. So the habit thing was very much a factor. I scrub the ground whenever possible with my EXII, but this machine is different. The X-Terra manual also says to keep the coil a bit above the ground.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm glad that the overall production was useful to you.
