I just received my Edge yesterday...

the control box is so small and the detector is so light it feels almost like a toy. The battery doors are not my favorite, nor the headphone plug in the back. I've had Coinstrikes but I find this one to be a little harder to just set it and go, so I'll be reading the manual tonight to understand all the modes and settings...it may be a good machine for my boys to use as well. I have both the 8 inch and 5.75 inch coils; it seems to separate adjacent targets great...I just want to try it in the iron and around some old cellar holes in the Spring after it thaws...I was just wondering what the recommended set-up would be at most old house yard sites?...any input would sincerely be appreciated...Thank you and HH

This is "my" Edge setup for old sites. Set to cP mode with nothingnotched out, disc at -19 to hear some iron and sensitivity at 8. If the iron/nails are real thick close to the foundation, turn the sensitivity down to 5 or 6. Copper wheats and some silver can read as low as the high teens in nail infested spots.. IH's even lower.. deeper nickels in iron are the toughest for the Edge to ID they tend to bounce both sides of the normal nickel range.

I always appreciate your posts about different machines along the more technical aspects of each and performance characteristics. I would assume that the lower ID in iron would be from target averaging? Thanks,

Chris

Thanks for the kudos Chris! Yes the lower ID is from averaging. Sometimes you can get them to climb closer to a proper ID if you resweep just right. You really have to pay attention to the tab range when hunting old sites. If the coil only partially sees the target it may report tab, but a resweep will show the proper ID... usually. Some iron will read good until you resweep also... the Edge is pretty good about that.

a silver dime ID's to about 6-7 inches, a nickel up to about 8 and a quarter about the same...does this sound about right at a sensitivity of 8, CP, -19,and no notching?
