Hello all,

I'm slowly getting the hang of the XLT, but sure would appreciate it if anyone has their own settings that they feel make them more successful.

Any other tips and tricks are welcome to!

Thanks in advance.

No secret programs out there only ones that work for you in your area, roughly 10 books written on the subject and Google as the net is loaded with programs for your perusal...
Don't get fancy and make sure your unit is stable....do remember change one facet and it may affect another so experiment and dig a lot and in time all will fall into place..
Most beef up their factory presets depending on their ground and do well..Do remember XLT goes deepest with a moderately fast swing so experimentation along that line is in order also.
Might pick up one of those 5.3 coils as thjey work wonders in trashy areas...with good depth versus the stock 9.5...all in all a great detector but don't become an over tweaker as you will spend
more time tweaking and less time hunting...

Check out the XLT classroom forum lots of good info there.
My self I like the pre programmed settings .
The only thing I change is VCO and Tone ID turned to on
makes the XLT come alive rather than monotone sound.

SO what be called "good depth" with the 5.3 coil?

great choice, you should not be dissapointed, I bought mine new and 13 years and never have been skunked, I dont do the tweeking thing, I just hunt in the factory programs as they always work great for me and as mentioned earlier, it takes away from detecting time

It's been a long time since I answered a question on the XLT, but yours caught my eye.

Sorry, there is no easy, useful answer to your question. To be able to get the XLT to perform for you better than just using the factory pre-sets, you will have to learn the adjustments on your own. I could give you plenty of starting adjustments, but most likely they would just cause you grief in the long run. Any adjustments I had for favorites where I live, could not be compatible to you, and where you hunt.

My advice to you would be to read the user manual, when you have done that, do it again, and again. Pick one adjustment, say like AC Sensitivity. Make that one the only adjustment you adjust until you fully understand what is happening with it before going to another adjustment. Never adjust more that one at a time & don't switch off until you fully understand that function. It's also important that you learn how any adjustment you do, interacts with the rest of the adjustments on the detector. A great amount of the adjustments affect other adjustments on the unit.

If you can learn your XLT this way, you will be able to get it to perform any place you go with it, without taking the back seat to any of the newer detectors. :clapping:

Good luck.

Mr. Bill

PS: I purchased a XLT when they were first introduced, and I still have a XLT in my battery of detectors to use.

Thanks everyone for some great advice!

I took it out and tried one of the popular programs, it was maddening . . I just went back to coin and jewelry.

I did spend some time collecting programs and printing them out with some parts of the manual to take with me a sort of XLT bible for the field.

Hunted with an XLT guru for years and saw him pull more than one 7-8 inch silver dime...Don't know about the new 9.5 but the old one was around for 20 years and was a dinosaur and one didn't lose much depth with the 5.3.....

thats why i was telling you to up the pre-amp gain to about 6 or 7 and up the AC sensitivity just a bit too---you'll be surprised on how much it helps you get more depth. if you mess with too many settings like what you find on the net the machine goes nuts and beeps on anthing or nothing at all...................................................................................................................................................
