I just bought a used Excalibur. What mods?

Steve from Ohio

New member
I just bought a used Excalibur 800. It's about 2 years old.

What kind of modifications should I consider or keep it stock?

Straight shaft? New head phones? Upgrade to a NIMH battery? Another coil?

I know modifying the Excalibur is rough due to waterproofing considerations, so I would send it in to Minelab to have them done.

I'll be doing a lot of water hunting on Florida beaches along with swimming holes here in Ohio in the summer. My first use will be on the beaches in Florida.

Was getting the 8 inch coil a good thing or bad? I've heard some folks saying that the 8 inch is better for trashy areas and better for water detecting.

Any opinions on modifications?

Straight shaft? Yes! or waist/neck mount. New phones? make the stock ones work! unless you have money burning a hole.........well you know. I still use the stock phones. And no one has come close to my record day here yet. 7 gold rings on 1 day!! In water, 300 yard beach, 8 other hunters came and left. No chit? But, if I only had new phones I would have done better:laugh:
New batt.? why not.........that one is 2 years old, splurge.
New coil? lets not go there, make the 8 work for now. When you melt all that gold then buy.

Don't make this purchase into a science project, get out there and get BETTER:thumbup:

No buyers remorse here. I bought an E-Trac last week and this week the Excalibur. Had an explorer for a little over a year. I love Minelab products.

I was thinking that I would like to trick it out so it can be the best I can use. I guess I've always gotten the best of whatever because I know that if I got something less, there is always a doubt as to what could have been. Sort of like when I bought my first car. I t had roll up windows and no A/C. Until I got power windows and A/C , I really didn't know what I was missing. Now I would not have a car without them.

I was just curious as to what may be a better set up with the basic machine.

I appreciate the feedback though. You are right of course, Just go out and use it I am now thinking and let the thing pay for itself first and sell what I find to pay for the other stuff.

As a result on all of the comments of EXCAL 1000 over the last 2 months why doesn't Excal issue some modifications to be made to this united to settings, head phones or coils. It would be nice to know what set up works in east cost, west cost, and places like Alaska and HAWAII? We all have different soils and interference by nature. Nothing is perfect science.

Can the EXCAL FORUM ever be a forum by itself. There is so much infromation on it's new products why deal with olther models?

i like the 8" coil better in water than the 10".the head phones on the 4 Excal's iv had worked fine.the only thing i changed was to a strait shaft and get the new NIMH battery pk.i mounted the detector on my back with a load berring vest and love it!

Hey Steve, I am an avid beach/water hunter, and I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND an after-market Straight Shaft!! Nimh Battery is MUCH BETTER than Ni-Cad, but you may get another (2) yrs. out of that Ni-Cad if you don't recharge it after every outing. On a full charge, you should get close to 14hrs. detecting time, depending on the condition of your used Ni-Cad Battery. Next, I recommend a Long-handled Stainless Steel Scoop, but some like the Heavy Gauge Aluminum Scoop! Finally, make due with the existing headphones. BEST OF LUCK, Les Robinson

Thanks Les.

I hunted fresh water for almost 20 years with a Fisher 1280X and when in Florida I was having all kinds of problems with water causing the detector to go crazy so I was sticking to the dry sand. I just got my E-TRac and now the Excalibur so I am updated for the next few years or until a new technology comes out.

I have a straight shaft on order and also a NIMH battery. I have all the other extras that I need including the scoop. . My home made scoop has a float attached to the handle in case I drop it. I've got the wet suit ( SAS titanium ) and it really keeps me snug and warm even in 45 degree water. I had a friend who was water detecting at Myrtle beach and was not wearing a wet suit. He got hit with an undertow and was swept away. They found him about an hour later floating face down. So I'm wearing a wetsuit no matter what. The thing is when I wear it, I float like a cork. Good for safety but hard to stay on your feet sometimes when hit with a big wave.

Steve, Glad to be of ASSISTANCE!! Be very CAREFUL-NOT TO PANIC, while trying to recover from being hit by a big wave!! You'll use up alot of energy,
and it increases your chances of getting yourself into real trouble!! I don't know if you are aware of this, but if you get caught in a RIP CURRENT, ALWAYS
SWIM ACROSS the current, until you don't feel it pulling you out to sea anymore!! Then you can start SWIMMING BACK TOWARD the SHORELINE, and shallower water. BEST OF LUCK, now find some G-O-L-D!! HH, Les Robinson
