I hit the wheat jackpot

Mark in S.E. IA

New member
Sat I got permission to hunt 2 yards beside each other and owned by the same guy. I could keep everything I found but I had to show the owner what I found. The first yard was nothing but wheat's, one right after the other, but no silver. The owner was out doing yard work and every time I found a wheat he wanted to know what the date was so I had to clean them enough to see the date and after about 10 of them I just put them in my pocket and went back to MDing an told him I got another wheat and you can check the dates later, lol. Just about that time I found a clad dime and he wanted to know the date and I told him I could careless what the date is on a clad coin. I think he got the drift after that, lol.

I moved over to the second yard and it started off like the first yard finding wheat penny after wheat penny until I found a Buff and then the finds started to get better after that and he got back to having to see the coin right away and the date too if it was something other then a wheat. He even when in the house and got a bowl of water and a tooth brush to clean the coins. He was right beside me when I found my first silver coin in that yard and it turned out to be a 1895 Barber quarter. Right away he's asking me what it's worth and I told him just a few dollars because it's wore down real bad. Then he says that he will pay me 3 or 4 dollars for it because he would like to have it real bad.....After he said that I walked over to my car to get a pop and I looked the coin up in the Mag and saw that G-4 went for about 6 bucks. I told him that he could have it but I needed to take pictures of if first for my records and then he can have it, that made him happy. A lil later he found a 1895 Barber Q listed on ebay selling for 33 dollars and it was graded at VF+ so I had to explain to him why the Barber I dug out of the ground was not worth 30 bucks because it's wore down real bad and the one on ebay had a full head band and full liberty. I found 2 German coins and he had to research them on his damn cell phone and the 1913 one that was selling for 35 bucks and again I had to explain to him why that one is selling for 35 bucks and the one I dug out of the ground is pretty much worthless. I found 3 tokens in that yard and he research them, thank god he did not find any for sale, lol. I found 5 IH's and he researched them too plus the other silver coins I found. He's a real nice guy but he was getting on my nerves a few times, lol. Also he got me permission to MD his neighbors yard behind him, plus this guy owns a huge old house just over the border in Minn and I can MD it too but he has to be there and I have to show him everything I find. He showed me pictures of the house in Minn and I want to MD it real bad like.....

Between those 2 yards I found 47 wheat pennies and one was shot with a BB gun. I think that's the most wheat's I have found in one day.

Thanks for lookin

The V is a 1912d, that's the first 1912d I have found.

Great finds Mark but sounds like to much drama for me to enjoy having someone over my shoulder all the time...
Thank God you didn't find a Gold Coin!

Doug, that's not funny. He talk about me finding a gold coin and I'm glad I didn't, lol

When the land owner follows you around asking questions I call it a - "Hand Hold Hunt" - it can be a real hassle !

Anyway ... congrats on the fantastic finds ! :clapping:

Great finds Mark! That hunt gave the etrac and you a good workout. A lot of good targets.
I have never had a land owner be that concerned about what I found before on a private hunt other than
me showing them what I found when I was done. All the land owners always seem to joke with me before I start about if I
find gold we would split it

What a couple of productive yards! Congratulations on all the finds and cheers for your patience with the curious owner! Thanks for the pictures.

Great bunch of coins. It always scares me when the property owner wants to see all the coins I'm finding - I'm just waiting for them to ask for or demand that I give them the best coins.

excellant finds...!!! I recently gave up some coins to a property owner and it wasn't part of the deal in the beginning either.... First time I've gave up anything other than jewelry, toys, tokens, etc., which is my usual terms.

Great bunch of finds!

The potential of owners shadowing is only one of the reasons i rarely door knock but Its their property and they have a right to see the finds. Apparently this guy went a step further than over the shoulder looking though he was willing to pay for that Barber you found.

Did you make any pre-agreement with him as to the finds?

ironsight, yea..... I could keep everything I find but I had to show him everything I found.

Monday I stopped by his house and gave him the Barber quarter, a Merc and a IH. I really do not like to give up my finds but on the other hand I do find enough stuff and they go in the pile with the other coins I find so I do not mind giving up a few coins once in awhile. I just did not like the way he went about it,,,, having me show him every time I dug something up.

Hey Mark,
That would make me a little uncomfortable having to show every find right away. At least you found a ton.
I was in IA once years ago detecting a real old house where I had mustered up the courage to ask the old guy working in the yard if I could detect it.
He said sure as they had just bought it as a rental fixer upper. Was going fine getting Indians, barber dime, merc, v nickels, wheats until his wife came by. She chewed me out first and then her husband next as she said wanted to buy a detector and detect it. She then calmed down and wanted me to teach her how to metal detect. I talked for 10 minutes and hit the road. On the flip side I have had farmers who have refused taking silver from me as they said I did all the work so I should keep it. Most of the time my wife who is more of a social butter fly than me gets me permission from someone she knows so those are always real good experiences.
I used to detect private sites more but now I go almost all public.

I've read this exact same scenario a bunch of times on detector threads. Whats with some of those women?

After being 'chewed out' by the wife, i would of politely but quickly thanked them and left immediately without a word. 10 minutes? no way!

You're right about the farmers. Just about all my hunting on private sites are farm fields. So far all of them could care less on what i find. They got more important things to worry about like plowing, planting, fertilizing and harvesting.

I asked one of them who gave me permission already if he wanted to see an old platt map of a one room school house on his property. Wasn't interested at all.

Well if Cook Alfredo is combined, two containers exchange positions creating the storage part a bit more difficult. Once the last component floor tile is gone the player with the most floor tiles victories. Performs 2-4, age groups 5 and up as well.
