I Hit Mega Gold Tonight With Olympic Gold Medalist LaShawn Merritt

I had to work the police department tonight due to the city throwing a "Welcome Home and Congratulations" party for Portsmouth native and Olympic Gold Medalist LaShawn Merritt. I was assigned near the VIP tent when he came to the tent entrance with his family and friends. I asked him "Mr Merritt, would you mind if I had my picture taken with you?" He said "Call me LaShawn and come on over". What an outstanding young man. Absolutely 100% humble and a true gentleman. He took the time to let us take pictures with him and the rest of the officers assigned to the event.[attachment 105274 ronandlashawn.jpg]

These things weigh a ton! Solid gold. I don't see how Michael Phelps was able to hold his haed up with 8 of these suckers around his neck![attachment 105275 goldmedals.jpg]

From perusing around the net because I was curious as to how much they weighed and what it would be worth. They're not solid gold. This is something I did not know either.

Here's what I generally get on info for gold medals,

"Every Olympics have their own medal designs and total weight may vary. There are certain requirements involved.... each Olympic medal must be at least 68mm across and 3mm thick. The gold medals must contain at least 92.5% silver, and at least 6 grams of 24-carat gold must coat each gold medal."

So 92.5% of it is silver with the rest being a gold coating. Probably worht around 400-500 dollars BUT depending on who's it is could command a much higher price because of it's celebrity value.

Just imagine Phelps selling his 8 medals, he certainly would more than $500 a pop for it one, that is for sure.

Very Nice, Ron! There should be a few perks for all of those years of 'serving and protecting'. He looks like an upstanding young man.

Cheers Mate,

That should be worth blowing up and framing to hang on the wall. Amazing how many famous people really just want to be regular people. btw, how long have you been a police officer up there. I have many relatives in VA Beach and Norfolk. My uncle (long deceased) retired from the Norfolk Dept. I used to stay with him in the mid sixties when I was stationed there. Thanks for sharing the story and photo and stay safe. Happy hunting to you.

Attended the academy and was sworn-in February 1975, many years ago. Been lots of years and lots of fun. He treated everyone super. He stopped and took the time to speak to everyone who approached him. It is nice to see someone appreciate where he came from and how lucky he is.
