I have so much to learn

Finally got my v3i in and took it out today in the bitterly cold wind. I was very relieved to not have to dig as many pull tabs and pop tops. I did find it strange that I found more nickles than I ever have. I'm using the factory settings right now till I learn more. I did have a nice hit at 88-91 vdi showing quarter or 50c piece at 6and a half inches. The problem was that every time I tried to dig it it would move one way or the other but always staying the same depth I finally gave up, any clue why it would do that? I did want to mention that one of the nickles I found was at 8inches 1941. Overall very pleased with this machine cant wait for it to pay me back.

I get more nickel with the v3i the one thing that help me was I set the vdi tone for the nickel to the quarter vdi tone now the nickel sound like a quarter. Where there nickel there GOLD.

Sounds like you had a good first day with your detector. The icons are only a guide and with more experience you'll realize this. In fact the pros get rid of the icons on the screen altogether so the screen isn't so cluttered. As far as your target moving on you with the approx 90 vdi, its was probably iron. It could have been a coin next to iron too. There will be many instances when you have strange signals. This is what makes this hobby so great. You're on the right track. It's best to try and dig all targets (at least the targets that seem to be coin size or smaller) at first when anyone gets a new detector. Good luck

If you locate the target and then when you pinpoint it is off to the side of where you thought it should be, it was probably iron.

Had that happen to me as well here in Illinois on the last 50 degree day--stayed with it though and i turned up a small spike nail with no other target that i could see or detect--had the swiss cheese look when done but buried the hole and it will look untouched by spring--mine was reading 93--Hey Tim like that idea of making a Nickel sound like a Quarter.HH

For some reason, here in eastern Washington, rusty nails buried horizontally will sometimes give a really good signal, steady tone with good numbers. When pinpointed and you dig that spot there is nothing. Enlarge the diameter of your hole and there is the nail. Gotta dig though.

that's what I thought it was, but wasn't sure if I was missing something or not, also when setting the nickel to sound like a quarter, how is this done? any help will be appreciated.
