I have been using the Garrett MasterHunter 7 for a long time and I want a GT. Is this machine the way to go....Thank You.

Depends on what type of hunting you are going to do plus with the GT you have to swing the coil slow. The GT hate iron and you can not notch out the new zinc pennies, but why would you as you will lose the IH pennies and some gold rings. The Sovereign GT works with the tones mostly and I do recommend a meter to help learning the tones as you will see a digital number for the tones that may sound the same at first.
As i say you have to go slow as this detector will be nulling a lot most are finding out as it seems there is iron everywhere, but it will also see some good targets close to trash other detectors wont see, so you have to swing slower to hear these. The Sovereign will give a different tone to each item conductivity and hold the tone until it sees it next target. The volume will raise as you go over the target and lower as you past the target, but the threshold tone will be of the last target it sees.
It takes some patience with the Sovereigns and the first few time out you may feel you made a mistake, but spend the time with it and this detector will do well. It is my favorite detector I have used since 1973 when I started and I do have some nice finds, but the first few times out with it I felt it was to confusing. Now I can tell you more about a target then any detector I have used and find the ID is one of the best if not the best ID. I better mention that I am a coin hunter myself and enjoy working those areas everyone says is worked out as I show them it is not plus I can go slow and listen close to those deep coins or those close to trash that has been missed over and over again and don't have to get blasted with the surface coins.

Good luck and if you get one be sure to come back with your questions and show us your finds from some of those areas you have worked before.

if i could only have 1 detector to hunt land with it would be the GT! with the Sun Ray S5 coil for trash area and the S12 for the beach! iv found many dimes beyond 12" with the GT & S12 on the beach.it does sport a learning curve .i sold my 1st one after 2 days.then we moved to the coast and i saw guys digging coins way beyond what my detector couldn't pick up..i bought another GT and S12 coil and have never been sorry! only wish they were water proof! if you get one ,stick with it for 8 or 10 outings and you will learn to love it.good luck.

I hunted for quite awhile with a Garrett GTI 1500. I then bought a Minelab Excal for water. I love the excal. The next detector was a Sovereign GT. Having used the Excall I was used to BBS 17 frequencies so the transition to GT was easy. However I bought a meter and what a difference that makes. I did OK without the meter, but with it I save a lot of time by not digging bad targets. The next item I bought for the GT was a Sunray probe. This is also a great addition to the GT. In all the GT is just the best Beach and land detector I have ever owned. My Garrett gets very little play these days. Like Rick said it takes time to learn, but it is well worth the effort once you master the tones. Good luck and good hunting.

I just purchased a GT as an addition to my Excalibur the GT to be used in wet sand hunting. The GT is one heck of a machine although I have only used it for a 1/2 hour, what a half hour that was. Two silver pieces of jewelery in that half hour and the tone sizing of targets is fantastic. There is a learning curve as others have said, but this book will really shorten that learning curve and is a must read even for seasoned veterans, it sure helped me. http://www.findmall.com/read.php?44,619683,619683#msg-619683
The GT will be a keeper for me as I don't think I want to dig any deeper.

If you have a strong arm and back the GT is about the best around. Don't get it wet and there is quite a learning curve.

I use both the GT and the Elite...both are great machines in wet sand.

Spend the time to learn the GT and you will find some very deep targets in trashy areas. Just spend the time to learn what the machine is telling you and keep your swing rate slow. Don

The Sovereign is the way to go, I've had mine now for 5 yrs, the simplicity of this detector is what makes it such a great machine. Like the rest of the folks here have said, the first few times out will be a little confusing because of the tones, a meter is a handy tool for learning what the tones relate to in the ground. The next must have is the Sunray probe, I went a year before I got one, If I ever upgrade (not until my machine dies) this product would already be added to the cost. Like Rick said its great to go behind someone else swinging at light speed and telling you the place is hunted out and you start getting the deep goodies.
Be patient, go slow, and be ready to dig deep.

Two pieces of advice:
1) It is better to ask for Forgiveness than Permission
2) Spend the extra $$'s and get an Excal, it opens up a wider range of hunting possibilities and it won't turn into a boat anchor if you drop it in the water

Cheers,

I just bought a Sovereign gt, two weeks ago. The first one I've owned, I think it works great. I'm using it on Myrtle Beach, so far finds are about $8.00 and a lot of pop tabs. no good finds yet. When the fishin gets slow the metal detecting gets me out on the beach.

Great Purchase. Hope you start finding the treasures. I used to detect Myrtle Beach alot and have found alot of silver coins. I'm just waiting on the next big North Easter this winter. I live in Charlotte and my friend is coming down this weekend before New Years. Hope the Barber coins shows up soon in you area.
