I have come to the conclusion that the V3 can easily be messed up by tweaking...

Mine had become really unstable and no fun to use, especially in C&J... which should be a good "go to" program. Yesterday PM I went out in the yard long enough to restore C&J from the library and I like it so much better now. I don't know what I did to mess it up so badly but I think the main thing was turning on "tone ID". Tone ID can be a great tool but I don't think I was ready for it. It seems much more stable now. I think I am going to restore all my programs to the factory settings and start out with changes a bit slower.

I would like for some who are experienced White's users to help me to know where to start, what settings to experiment with changing first. I am thinking that I will try tweaking the Gorund Filter and Recovery Delay only to begin with. I usually lower the disc to include -30 but I don't know if I should do this or not.

I was about ready to give up so... I am all ears...

Thanks,

Julien

The stock C&J and Hi-Pro programs are really good right out of the box. I use the Hi-Pro with very few changes and that is in the tones. I did change the filter to 7.5 Band Pass, and the recovery delay is the only change I make depending on how much trash is in the ground. I do like the Correlate Best Data mode for the trashy yards that I hunt and I have experimented with single frequency from time to time.

I don't know what I did to mess it up so badly but I think the main thing was turning on "tone ID".

Running tone ID doesn't effect stability. What you need to do is simplify the number of tones. I set all my ferrous VDI to one tone. If I hear that tone I know I have ferrous junk.

Then I have all my VDI from zero to 17 and 22 to 55 with a second tone. ( If I'm hunting Indians 17 to 45).

My nickels get the same tone as my dimes and quarters. I like to set the nickel 17 = 190, 18 = 195 19 = 205( high coin tone) 20 = 195, 21 = 190. The 50 to 94 range varies for different programs. New sites I don't include zinc's in my coin tone range, Old sites zinc VDI and lower are included in the coin tone.

68 to 94 get a fourth tone. (pennies, dimes, quarters). (Set this tone for all coin VDI you want to hear)

That's just four tones to hear and all my coins are one tone. I also set all my rejected VDI to zero tone. I seems to run cleaner. I also run lower tones then most people because my hearing works better on the lower tones. Rob.

With so many settings it is difficult to keep track of which tweak did what. You could take the program spreadsheet and change the cell background color on the settings you change and then, perhaps, document the results in the comment fields on the right. As time went by you'd end up with settings that produced benefits that you actually understand. I don't know if I'd have the patience for that though. My settings are only different from the factory in terms of tones, discrimination, delay and some display settings. I do try various alternatives, but my go-to program is pretty standard.

I think I am going to stay close to the factory settings for a while, just GB, change the Filter and possibly the Recovery. If I set a program for minimal disc I will try Shifted tone. Other than that... i'm going to just hunt. I think having "tone ID" on was confusing me, it isn't that becomes less stable but there is a lot more to listen to and any falsing can be different tones.
After I get used to hunting in one tone or shifted I may play with some custom tone scheme, maybe three tones for non-ferrous and a really low tone for iron.

Thanks for the help!
