I Have a question.....its about the sound of silver on an explorer XS.

Silver always had a diff. sound to it from its close coin the clad quarter. Weather it was a ring or silver coin. It had a softer sweeter sound with no abrupt ting or ping at the end, it sort of gradualley faded in and faded out. Now I never hear it...it sounds like a clad quarter now. I am pretty sure I have not changed a thing as far as set up goes. The only thing I can think of is maybe, It happened when I went from vanco headphones to grey ghost ultimates. Is this a possability? I no longer have the Vancos to try them again. If only I could get that sound back cause when I heard it I knew it was something SILVER!
I use to hunt side by side with a good friend that had a whites IDX pro and he could only say it is either a dime or quarter or maybe silver, and I could always tell him it was a dime, or it was a clad quarter, or it was a silver coin or ring. Thats why I liked the xs better cause I could tell the diff. due to more info.dimes and clad quarters is still a no brainer but silver I have lost the sound to it.

I would bet on the headphones being the culprit, however don't know your age but ones hearing can change also...Of course tonal interpetation is what its all about and hope you didn't change your variability or other settings as that may be the culprit..Another aid is silver will usually show higher on the cursor screen than a clad dime etc...

and it's more than likely the headphones. Each set has it's own "sound"...and regardless of the cost...we get used to the tones that particular set puts out. I went from stock Fisher headphones to Sunray pro gold and it took some getting used to. I still use the Fishers on my cz70pro.

I have always used var. 8 but even tried others to see if it would come back...nope...I have kept the same set up for a long time cause it is what I found to work best for me and my ears. I am 45 so hearing I think is same...even though eyes are going down hill fast...Its got to be the headphones...I miss that sound of silver....they were only $30 headphones....and didn't last very long...but it had Ideal sound on variability diffrences.

I like the Koss headphones that are made for minelab. This webpage explains it all http://www.detectusa.com/technical.htm

OMG.....JHM.....Soooooooo Me having the minelab explorer xs whats a good match up ? thats way too much info for me to absorb tonight.....I bookmarked it and will read when my eyes are awake. But if you are a expert and can tell me whats a good match-up feel free...to share. BTW thanks for the info...good stuff!

Well I guess it must be my ears...I found the orig. head phones that came with the Expl. xs and the Vanco headphones only one ear works and of course Greyghost that I use now. I tried all 3 and yes all 3 are diff. sounding. But none make that sweet softer silver sound. So I guess it is my ears....Oh well I guess I will know when it is uncovered.

Could be the ground you are detecting in too or the amount of trash nearby. For me it is a non-issue, I dig all the clad anyway. Some silver signals are not that good, anything in the dime, quarter range I dig. You can go by how deep it is on the depth meter but I find silver shallow also.

I used to have good success at finding silver with the KOSS UR 30 headphones that came supplied with the explorer 2. Some months later I changed to some to nugget busters because a dealer told me they were really good , to cut a long story short i stopped finding silver coins. I tried to figure it out why the silver count had suddenly stopped , the headphones just had to be the reason. I think many people may not understand just how extremely important a good "matched to your detector" pair of head phones can make to metal detecting success. They make a big difference. Back to nuggett busters- I have never been happy with the nugget buster Headphones , the leads fail easily and they feel flimsy , no where near worth the
