How much snow does it take before all the schools close down?

Last night our local mountains got 5-7" and this AM the news said all 8 schools in that district will be closed. The next story said that all the local ski lifts will be open and doing business. (what do you think, the local school board members own stock in the ski lifts )

Keep in mind this is Southern CA and people still don't know how to drive in the rain yet.

One day last February the weather was predicting heavy freezing rain for that night and the following morning. All the school's and day care centers closed. We got about 1/2" of rain. While we're on the subject, when I was in grade 5 it took me about 30 minutes to walk to school. We had a major storm one day. On the way the wind was at my back and I got there in 15 minutes. Going home took an hour. Close the schools!! pshaw I say!!

In the States schools are allowed to receive their tax dollars for so many snow days per year. Anything over that the school year is extended. Later in the season they scrutinize more closely when those days are used. If public schools had days off we gave our kids the day off or we would let them save them and use as they wished. They loved having the option.

I remember having the day off for 2" of snow with freezing rain in the beginning of the winter and having school when it snowed 8" toward the end. The teachers liked the day off as much as the students.
As for drivers in Southern Cali, I hear you there Dan. It took us all day to get to Big Bear or Snow Valley if we left after 7;00 A.M.from the Stumps. We used to head up on Friday and hit the bar before closing and sleep in the back of the truck to save beer money, then go skiing. An inch of snow up there and people would be off the road all over. Ah the good days of Twentynine Palms :)

snow coming, there is a run on bread and milk at the grocery store and the schools prepare to shut down!!! If it does snow an inch or so, everything shuts down!!!:lol::lol:
