I have a lot of people asking me about an inexpensive good detector....

for $200-400 (new or used). I like the Whites Classic models or IDX but have heard mention the ACE 250 was a deep seeking, good detector, with tone I.D.. Anyone have any views on this or other good detectors in this $ range?

Most name-brand beginning price point detectors will work fine in "friendly" ground. It's when you detect in highly mineralized ground that the extra features provided by mid to upper range machines show their importance. Or if you want more than just tone ID.

I'd not hesitate buying a used modern or fairly modern White's machine. Even though they say their warranty is only 2 years, I've seen machines out of warranty for 6 to 8+ years get fixed and returned from the factory for the cost of UPS insured shipping, $15 I think. White's REALLY cares about their customers and their White's detector! If you ever visit the factory, its darn obvious. Heck, they even send Elson to Vegas ... or so he says.

With that in mind, why buy a new beginning price machine when you can spend the same for a used much better mid price to top of the line White's machine? Manuals can be downloaded from White's web site.
