This is my first CZ-5 any comments or hints on it would be appreciated also what kind of depth these things get? Are they as deep as a 1266x? Also how do they perform in mineralized soil? The serial # starts with 12 is this a first Texas made one or before first Texas?
You have a real Fisher, made in Los Banos, not the new First Texas stuff made today. The CZ5 is one of the best CZ's made in my opinion. Your CZ5 will hit a dime at 10 inches plus in good soil. I owned a 1266x for years and it was pretty deep, but the CZ5 is deeper.
Run the disc at zero and sensitivity at around 5 or 6. Running the disc at zero will let you hear the iron grunts that sometimes want to give a high coin signal. This saves alot of digging and helps cherry pick in the iron. Check your signals from 90 degrees to see if it repeats... if it does you have
a good target. If the signal drops out at 90 degrees it is probably junk. Mineralized soil shouldn't be a problem at all, just get a good ground balance for the best performance. Definately buy a 5 inch coil for your CZ5... it goes just about as deep as the stock 8 inch coil and is great in heavy trash.
I have owned most of the CZ's except for the CZ3D and the CZ5 is what I kept. I run my volume all the way up at 10 and the audio boost kicks in after 5. Certainly no weak signals with the volume cranked up to 10. Sweep the coil slow to get the best depth and overlap your sweeps.
You are in for a pleasant surprise when hunting with a CZ. They love nickels and gold, are super easy to set up, built like the proverbial brick shithouse, and will hold their own depthwise with almost anything made today. Enjoy your new CZ5, it's a keeper for sure !
How do you think it would do on relic hunting ? I also have a Tejon I use on relics but if I was ever out and only had the cz-5 would it get the job done on relics and also if anyone on here has used it for relics and have a general idea where brass lead and other items fall on the id and tone let me know!
I have never owned a CZ5 but I purchased a CZ6 back in the early 90's when they first come out and wish I still had it. My son owns a CZ6-A which he purchased soon after I bought mine. I told him to never get rid of it and if he did I wanted to buy it.
I believe the CZ5 is basically the same as my CZ6 and if so you have bought a great machine. As far as operating in poor soil simply ground balance it and it will operate almost any where. If you didn't get a owners manual with yours they are still available on line from Fisher.
These machines have super depth, is really light to work with, has great separation and will operate under most conditions. I have found coins up to 12 inch's deep and once found a silver dime at 10" on edge. Hunting a old park I once found Barber Quarters and Dimes at 10 to 12 inch's. They are a great machine, I don't know of any machine made today that will beat the depth that machine is capable of. I sure wish I had not gotten rid of mine.
I wish you great success with yours, take your time and learn it and you will do great. Rick IL
I have been using a XLT and a Cortes does either one come close to the depth capabilities of the cz -5? I already like the thoughts of the multiple tone Id! Now after what you posted Rick I am even my excited about getting it! It sounds like my worked out spots may be new to me again!!
CZ's properly tuned coil for coil may be the deepest unit on the planet coil for coil..Cortes is surely no match for it depthwise but some long time XLT users can get some great depth but all in all just not does not have the raw depth of a CZ...but again some learned longtime XLT users get some nice depth tweaking the unit for their neck of the woods...
I got the cz today this thing is in like new shape! Man I am tickled to death with it's appearance! I don't see a scratch anywhere on it the guy I got from had 2 this was his backup it came with a carrying case and manual!! I will try and get out with it asap and I will tell you how it handles my mineralized soil. I have read the manual front to back and I like the thoughts of it having several different ways of ground balancing it. I believe it's a little heavier than what I have been using so I guess my arm will be getting a little more of a work out but it will get used to it. I may try hip mounting it or may buy a chest mount for it, if I come across one.
Use the bobbing method for ground balancing with volume and sens. at 10...after balancing you can always set them to your spec's.
In actuallity they are not that heavy its just the ergonomics that puts a strain on certain muscles of the arm and once you build them up by using for several weeks you will not find them heavy.
For depth hunt with a slow sweep speed and Google Mikes CZ page as it has a wealth of info for a CZ owner. Real deep unit that likes old rusty deep nails but there are ways to tell and Mikes page will help.
I took it out today and found a 10 karat mans ring with what looks like a diamond in it! Then after finding 15-20 nickels I found a little 14 karat white gold necklace with a little heart charm with stones in it! This detector is a nickel and gold finder!! Why in the heck didn't I get one sooner?? I kept asking myself ! I also found the usual clad coins and on the way back to the truck I got a good signal dug down 2" and up popped a Chinese coin the size of a silver dollar! The CZ-5 gave me the best day of hunting I have had all year! I had hunted here with other detectors and now wonder what I might find at other sites I had hunted!! Both of the gold items fell in the foil range! The Chinese coin fell in the nickel range.
My next adventure will be the local lake beach with it. I will let you guys know if I find something good! Later Morgan
