Why does Whites, and other companies, make detectors without a volume control knob? I realize using headphones is the ideal way to hunt. But, sometimes I like to hunt without them, or at least have the option, and would like to have a volume control knob. Some detectors do, and some detectors don

there are times when i prefer to hunt without phones..mainly for safety reasons,eg,if im in an area that may have snakes, suspect people etc..i find when i am hunting with phones, probably like most people,i get so absorbed,my hearing senses take over predominately, and find that i become totally oblivious to most things visually..ive had my hunting partner and complete strangers come up and tap me innocently on the shoulder while i was engrossed and nearly had a heart attack! :) ..i dont care if they say it will eat more batteries etc..there are just some occassions where you dont want to use phones! ...

It is probably cheaper to not put in the circuitry and have the headphones do that work than it is to design the volume control into the detector. Just my 2 cents.

You get used to them pretty quick. I have been using them since I started detecting and I really like them. You will still get fully engrossed into detecting and listening for the sounds but no surprises when someone or something sneaks up on you.

I think they are making a kick back from the people who make the ear phones :yikes: all kidding aside I thought that there was a volume knob on the MXT
