I had to restart the XT70 3 times today, what's up with that?...

Pushed the power button ON today twice and the XT70 shutdown, third time was a charm and I was able to detect with no problems other than iron. What's up with that? HH, Mike

Try re-stretching the coil springs carefully. Some have used a crochet needle to hook the top of the spring and pull gently. In future use don't drop the batteries in, in a vertical plane as this may set the springs.

you were to cut some small pieces of high density foam rubber, and put it inside the springs, if that might solve the weak battery spring problem? If I run into this problem with my X-Terra 70, I just might give that a try.

Good hunting,

Curiosity has the best of me. Mike will have his questions but I have a few. Mike, bless his little courageous heart hunts in all weather. I am wondering how much hunting in bad weather as much as Mike does would effect the unit?
I'm not saying this is Mikes fault. I am asking because this is important to all of us who might hunt in wet conditions.

Hi Bob

Water can affect the operation of the membrane switches and LCD panel if enough gets inside. That happened to me once (my fault). After a good drying out it operated just fine with no further problems. However, I also tend to think its the springs.

I do hope it's just the springs.

I'm getting one probably around March, have they taken care of the know bugs if there were any in the xterra70?

Its not the first one reported, more likely there is several to fail out there in the future.

A spring should not be able to compress, spring steel is supposed to have enough memory to hold its original shape nearly forever if not overloaded.

Dont think wet invironment have something to do with it as long as so many have been reported before this one.

If it is the springs, Minelab should replace them with springs made from spring steel.

...and was using Ray-O-Vac batteries. Read a suggestion to switch to Duracells, which are evidently a bit larger. Since then no problems; so far!

It is very possible it is a water problem as I have done a few recent hunts in the rain and always leave the detector in the car. It may not have had a chance to dry out and it is cool now but not frozen. I took the detector in the house to change batteries that day and noted I had some water residue under the cover. The XT70 will get a run for its life over the next year as I will be in detecting heaven! Told a realtor where I want an apartment today, right in the middle of my detecting permit region where there is everything you could dream about detecting, Celtic fortress, Roman trade post, Medieval castle. Thanks all and HH, Mike

I had the same thing happen to me last Fall. I changed batteries and it went away. After testing the old batteries, I noticed they had a date code printed on the ends. The cheaper batteries date code (in ink) was directly on top of the contacts. I wiped them off with a cotton ball and some running alcohol and the ink went away. I put them back into the X-70 and problem was fixed.
For me, it was the cheap batteries that had the date code on the contacts. Energizer and Duracell do not do this.
Hope you find the problem.

I changed out the batteries and noted on the ends of the batteries, negative side, had a small dimple on them so they did not have a nice connection, the smallest jolt could have/did disconnected the battery. Replaced them and have had no problems in several hours detecting. Thanks for the tips all. HH, Mike
