I had this place to MD with great potential.

You ever have a place like that and just bomb out.?

I had a rain out at work and found a gap in the clouds to MD this new park, but old site. I saw pictures of this site from the 1800's where the ladies with their parasols would go for picnics. I saw a date on the rocks 1881. It was the high spot around town. Good place to picnic and a great view of the Monongahela river. I didn't have my camera, but snatch these pictures from the Internet.

It was a rain out, but still was 34 deg.F and very windy. Glad I had my body armor on. You snow birds know what I'm talking about. I had it all to myself. I checked rocks that would make stools for rest stops. I checked over hangs for shelter to get out of the elements. I MD cracks in rocks, level places for picnic blankets and places that looked like old paths. NADA!!!

I found two new coins. Hey, I have a F-70, I should have found something. :nopity:

Good effort, though, John and I probably wouldn't give up just yet on a 1800's era site. There might be some "deepies" around there since it is new and maybe some fill and grading took place. HH jim tn

the further down the hill you go the deeper the targets will be.the dirt washes down over the years.

johnny!..somone got there first with a f-75!..still!..should be somethin' left!..

We like to think that because a place is old, that there simply must be something there. It could just be that you are late.
Practical hobby detectors have been around for going on 40 years, now. There have been at least 2 heyday's during that time and we are into the third now. You may have just missed the boat.
Try the fringes and areas leading to the knoll. There may be something there.

Maybe. That's not the first time that has happened to me. I have been MD'ing in this state for two years and have only seen three people MD'ing. When I lived in Fl. I was lucky if I only saw three people a day.

True, BUT THEY DIDN'T HAVE A F-70!!!

it ain't like it used to be!..ya gotta be dedicated because basically the only ones left are the "hardened" hunters!..you figure all the easy stuff is just about gone, and people lose interest when silver isn't "jumpin" outta the ground!.detectors get sold, and they do something else!..also the cost of detectors creates a problem too because they aint exactly given' em away!..anything "decent" IS expensive!..

ya never really "miss" the boat!..so to speak, because with the advent of digital technology we are experiencing a relative resurgance in one;s ability to find good stuff where others have trod before!..the ability of processors that find targets in "nanoseconds" is enabling today's hunter to reap the benefits!

I wont argue that Mary. You are right - we are in a Golden Age for detecting.
But the goods still must be there, if you are to find them. You cannot find what never was, or that which was snatched up before you got there...

unfortunately there is really no way for you to predict that outcome ahead of time, and of course hunting the site(s) IS the ONLY determining factor.however given the extroadinary abilities of detectors like the fisher f-series,your odds of finding "stuff" that was overlooked are, indeed GREATLY enhanced!

Looking at the before and after pics, that place has seen some earthmovers and landscaping. You might do some research with the city and find out what was done. If you didn't find many modern coins there somebody is keeping it clean.

Good luck with it.

Story of my life, it seems like every place I spend time researching that looks like it's going to be the next hot spot turns out to be a dud

Heck especially in my area if an area looks good to you certainly looks good to the next detectorist and may have been picked clean. Have to agree looking at the pictures may have been refilled with new dirt making the goodies too deep to get..I guess it all evens out as have seen places that don't look good really produce for the same above reason...

I think this holds true for any area, Dan. It goes to the root of my original comments...
