I had a surprise experience today when asking for permission at someone's home...

I was in Atlanta, just off Peachtree Rd in the area where The Battle of Peachtree Creek began and asked a homeowner, with whom I was talking Re: another matter, if I might search their property for relics. I informed her that there had been a battle there in the Civil War etc, blah blah... and she say's "OH yes, we know. My husband is interested in Civil war stuff. His great, great, grandfather was General Sherman".... ...

I hesitated, not sure what to say then told her that I also had a couple of great, great, grandfathers who fought in the war, but on the other side. She laughed and said that yes, most everyone else in the area had the same...

She said I could hunt though. I'll feel kinda obligated to offer him anything I fine there though, and I don't guess i'll have a problem with that...unless it's a sabre or an artillary shell.

Anyway, I thought that was a neat story...

Hi, Julien. It really is neat how much you learn about people and how often they are willing to let you hunt their property if you just take the time to talk to them and let them know up front what you want to do. I had a very old and dear friend some years back who lived on his family plantation that dated back to Civil War times and had a history of occupation by troops from both sides. I was offered unlimited permission to hunt his property but found that I spent more time with him than I did hunting. He was a wealth of knowledge and a wonderful old guy. I really miss him. He has been gone for quite a few years now and his property is no longer open for the public. His request the first time that I ever met him was that I could keep whatever I found but that he wanted to see anything that I found. He was true to his word and I found some nice things in the ground but nothing like the wonderful person I found when his door was opened that first day. If I were you I would try to get to know them better. They are far more valuable than anything that will come out of the ground. Best of luck to you and keep us updated.

Ill bet they dont tell too many "locals" about Sherman, not in Atlanta.
