I had a pretty scary close encounter yesterday in the water

My wife is always on my butt about being careful while I'm in the water hunting. With all the sharks in the news lately I'm sure it's on everyone's mind. It was about 7am yesterday morning I was a little over waist deep inside the sand bar. It was just a little choppy because of the sand bar, but for the most part conditions were pretty good. I constantly scan all around me when I'm out there, at this point I was the only one in the water with just a few people walking the shore line. So I'm heading south along the shoreline about 30 feet off shore. I turn my head to the right and within an arms reach is a huge dark mass about the size of my car, at that very same moment that I saw it (I almost reached out and clubbed it!) it stuck it's snout up and exhaled. It scared the live sh*t out of me! I see manatees all the time and even get pretty close to them but this one scared the bejesus out of me. I'll bet it was 12 feet long and about 3-4 feet away just cruising along without a care in the world. Me on the other hand was the only guy in the water cussing and swearing at the water at 7am.

Man! I thought it was gonna be a bull shark...a scare like that would just about turn you into a totlotter real quick! Did you find anything after doing your bilge dump?
Mud

The big guys are on the rut this time of year...might of seen the same one Tuesday off TI heading north...did you ever notice all the fish that follow in their tail wash....Usually see small snook, reds, and cobia in tow as they stir up the bottom with that huge tail...

I feel your pain. I was fishing near Turtle Mound one morning wading about up to my waist. All of a sudden a dark shadow appears and the manatee pops up. My heart was running at about 180. Funny thing is I see them all the time, this one sneaked up on me !! Good thing they don't bite, Ha Ha.

Man becareful out there!!! Keep safe! Hank

I had a similar incident a few months back. Wasn't that close to it but still scared the crap outta me before I realized what it was. Now , I hope to see some when I take my scuba lessons in a few weeks !

When I was in Florida 4 years ago, I was snorkeling and detecting and I was out with the black tipped sharks. I THOUGHT I was in front of the condo but I had drifted to a public beach. I heard a guy yelling at me to get out of the water. I yelled why? He kept screaming at me and wouldn't tell me why. He said I was going to jail!! I came out and asked him if he was a cop. He said yes. I said show me your id. He said it was at the lifeguard shack. He told me to sit in the 4 wheeler he was driving. I said NO. I am going back to the condo. Well I went back in front of the condos and went back in the water a while later I am getting yelled at again. I look up to see two uniformed cops. I get out and the rookie says I hear you were giving the lifeguard a hard time. I said no, he gave me one. I told him I used to be a state cop in Utah and he told me he was a peace officer and wouldn't show his ID and wouldn't tell me why I had to get out of the water. The Sgt chimed in and said there where sharks out there. I told him I was swimming with them and I knew. I told him the life guard was also impersonating a peace officer. The rookie got out a pen and paper and said who can we contact for next of kin. LOL I laughed.... Had a good talk with them and went back in the water.

FAST FORWARD to that evening. Too dark to snorkel so I was wading. About a 2' long fish jumped out of the water and hit me in the left shoulder. LOL I was SO scared I was shaking like a leaf!! Got out of the water and called it a night.

Pretty funny now but not then!!

Those Manatees scared the crap out of me on a few occasions when I lived in Florida. It's amazing how quiet they can be in the dark and then all of a sudden they surface right in front of you. :yikes:

I did return the favor once while I was shore fishing near Ruskin. I saw some commotion on the surface so I tossed a spoon at it hoping that it was a big feeding Snook. As soon as it it the water I felt a bump, so I set the hook. Right into the back of a Manatee! The thing ripped off about 50 feet of line before it surfaced, but for a few seconds I thought I had the biggest fish of my life.

Try accidently throwing a big cast net over one at night, thinking it was a school of mullet. It had me running down the seawall with the rope around my wrist, as I was trying to get my knife out at the same time. Funny, now.

Yikes! :yikes: I bet you wish you had that on video!

No manatees in California, most everything else though. 40 years ago (where does the time go?) I was snorkeling just below Santa Barbara with a friend. He didn't feel so well so he went and laid on the beach, leaving me just out past the surf line. I was in maybe 12 feet of water and kept seeing a flashing shadow out of the corner of my eye. I was careful to surface and make sure I was not drifting by staying straight out from my friend. As I turned to face back out to see, I discovered a seal 3 feet away looking me dead in the eyes. Poof! He was gone in a heartbeat and my heart was beating pretty fast for some time! Metal detecting is almost as exciting NOT. But better in so many ways!
