I am going nuts.I am having a real hard time with telling deep signals from shallow, real tiny things.Like the other day I dug a staple at the beach. Not a 1/2inch long construction staple but a small paper staple.I also dug 1 of those pieces off of an aluminum quart of beer lid, just one of the little thingies not the whole cap.Another example would be boot eyes and small brass washers that read in the coin range. I didn't mind finding the earring but I am wasting a lot of time looking for this small stuff.I have found 10 inch dimes and deep pennies and stuff.
Any advice I would greatly appreciate. Thanks,Ric

No pro but ... it sounds like you may have your gain too high. If it's 7 or higher it will make it difficult to hear the faint signals as faint signals ;^). What I mean is that it will amplify all signals to a level that seems overly loud making it difficult to determine target size/depth by signal strength (see page 54 of your manual). This can be compounded if you also have your recovery mode set to deep and/or sensitivity set very high.
Just for your information, on the beach I set my Explorer up to get it all (ie high gain , deep mode, max sensitivity) ... even the small stuff. I'm used to inland detecting where it is more difficult to dig so when I go to the beach, where the digging much easier, I'm looking for gold (small or large) and so I just set it for -10 iron mask and dig whatever signals I get.
Don't imagine this helped much, eh? 8^P

Yea you nailed that one on the head.I run at 7 gain, deep, and as high of sens as I can,was at 30 and 31 on the beach the other day.So do you think I will loose much depth if I crank the gain down to 5?I think I will crank her down some all the way around and see what happens.I just wanted to make sure I could get as much depth as I could but if I spend all of my time digging that little stuff it isn't getting much done. Thanks again,Ric

From what I've observed the tiny things are tough but not impossible to recognize, when you come across one of these tiny targets you know there's something slightly wrong in the way it sounds in pinpoint mode --it sounds smaller than it should be, like a dime sounds smaller than a quarter. With a tiny target it's a bit different, you may get a good target ID, and it shows deep on the meter, but in pinpoint it is a cross between "tiny and deep," as I said you suspect something and that is your first clue but because it is so close to a good deepie you most likely don't want to risk walking a way from it. Like you said a little piece of jewelry wasn't bad, well that's one reason you might want to continue digging them but the best reason I can say for continuing digging them is that eventually you will get better at distinguishing the deepies from the tiny surface junk. At this point I'm not 100% sure the tiny targets aren't actually good deepies but I have over time noticed the signal profile and variances on these tiny junkers is slightly more narrow, not punchy but slightly stronger in sound. I still dig'm though cause like I said I'm not 100% sure, and they could be jewelry too.
When I do suspect tiny junk I will only dig the initial plug and right away check it, the tiny junk targets will 90% of the time be in the plug --kind of a disappointment too finding them in the plug, cause then I know it's not a good deepie.

Some I do get a feeling that they are small before I dig.I check the plug first on those and they always are in the plug.I find myself a lot saying to myself not to dig but do anyway.I just can't leave a good sounding target go,guess I will just keep at it.It gets annoying at times but I do keep telling myself that the more junk I dig the quicker I will learn the good signals from the bad.

From my experience (but not a pro) I get most depth by leaving sens in manual and as high as possible without getting false signals. The volume I turn all the way up but the gain I've been leaving at about 4 (sometimes I crank it up if I don't want to distinguish deep from shallow...you can also see that on the depth meter). -Dave

But on the small stuff the meter reads it deeper than it actually is when I have the gain on 7
