We took the g-kids to the woods a few weeks ago to hike, catch lizards, ride four-wheelers, and hunt for berries. The kids enjoyed the huckleberries and the thimbleberries, but Anika and I found a patch of choke cherries. They are nice and red and have a pit and all that, but choke cherries did not get there name from their natural sweetness. You can make jellies and pies out of them if you use enough sugar, but you have to be starving or a bear to eat them off the bush. In fact, it you see a bear licking his rear end it is probably to get the taste of choke cherries out of his mouth!

This is what they look like on the tree. Yummy enough don't you think?

Anika is holding one in her mouth getting ready to bite down on its rich cherry goodness.
