I got stopped by a COP

10fold

New member
I was finished hunting for the day and was on my way home.

As I was walking down the road I see a cop driving towards me. no big deal. I have nothing to hide and the cops are cool here.
He swerves over into the on coming trafic lane and started heading right for me.
I start to giggle to my self, thinking "this is odd and strange". He pulls up right beside me, leans out his window and says "hey can I talk to you about your metal detecter?".
Ok now I am retracing my steps and thinking "did I detect in an area that I shouldnt have or leave a big mess of holes some where? NO! I do my absolute best to follow the metal detectors etiquette, so I know I'm all good". So I tell him "ya sure, you bet"

He starts quizing me up about the kind of things I find and how I like the detector I have (Garrett AT Pro international), how much it cost and where I bought it. he said that he was thinking about buying one himself. so I told about some of my cool finds and how as a result of metal detecting in the area where I live, it has really helped me learn the history of this area. I give him a run down on some of the cool things the AT Pro does. salt water/fresh water, 10' depth yuda yuda yuda.

We chatted for about a good 1/2 hour or so. spoke to one another using our fisrt names and the cool thing was, I found a live 303 round while hunting about an hour before this and I was going to take it to the RCMP (Cops) detachment the next day, but sinse we were talking I gave him the bullet and he saved me a trip. Cool guy. we shook hands and I went on my way, continuing to walk down the raod.

About a 1/2 Km down the road I see him again. He slows down and pulls up infront of me again.
Ok I will admit, there was a part of me that was thinking that the talk we just had was a ruse and now here comes the HAMER!
He rolls down his window and yells out "hey I have this map, do you want it?"
I took the map (very cool, full detailed map of the island and I mean VERY COOL MAP). I told him " wow thanks a lot". we shook hands once again and I wished him a good day.

Very cool guy.

This is why I go out of my way to help police and to be as kind as I can if they do approach me...Most are not out to bust your chops...Most are genuinely interested in what your doing, and being in an investigative job, it is just in their human nature to be curious about our hobby...Good Show!

HH,

I always mention that they probably also use a Garrett. Garrett has equipment specially designed for police work. Chances are, we are 100 x more efficient with a metal detector then any one on the force. In fact, they may even want to utilize our services one of these days. :) Check out the link below.

Love to hear that. Canada is cool all the way around; enjoyed my visits there.

I have always said theres nothing better then a good cop and nothing worse then a bad one..its always a pleasure to meet one of the good ones, my bro in law is a former cop and i got help from one when i was a kid and got my jaw broken, my son has gone along for ride alongs and one of my next door neighbors is a cop, my sons friends dad is one, they can make you feel good about the force, even when i was punched by a cop once and the video of it 'disappeared', finding a bad one doesnt make all of them bad and thankfully i have found a lot more good ones then bad ones.

I had something similar happen to me except i was driving a highly customized van and there were two cops who stopped me and i tjhought i was in trouble, after 10 minutes they were on the ground looking under my van at the mods but not to take me to task about them but to nderstand what they were, they thought the van was wicked...this was back in england so having a van with a big v8 and inside fully done was great to them....i sold the van a few weeks later because it was drawing too much attention from people....i preferred to get from A to B without getting pulled over to be asked questions or having to answer questions all the time.

Funny thing is i get asked questions all the time now about my detector....thankfully im not using that to pick up girls..lol...maybe their lost jewelry but thanks to the headphones i get to ignore people at will..lol

Just had a cop drive by today but thankfully most parks in massachusetts are detector friendly, only the most anal communities wont allow detectors on them but they state that at the enterance....still got my heart beating while i've got the lesche digger in my hands, im english and get very nervous around firearms....even after 10 years here...they just waved at me and drove off..i think someone had turned me in for being a man walking in the park carrying a knife or something like that....sometimes i think we have to wear a clowns outfit to make people less nervous
