I buried a penny about 7 inches and while it gave me a faint audio, it did not show on the meter. No VDI number or anything. I was surprised. Is this what you guys are experiencing? Will you get audio and no visual? Will it also matter what mode I am in?
I only was out for about 10 minutes. Not a big test.

where did you have your machine set? try coin mode with grnd bal locked, thing is try ANY machine with fresh burried 7" penny and see what happens in that type soil.

My first time out with my MXT bout 3 weeks ago was awsome.I dug 2 differt wheaties at 7 in. The machine locked on em like radar. I don't think a fresh buried coin will be the same as a old coin thats been in the ground a few years.Went back this week to the same place and dug probably 10 or 11 wheaties up to 7 in. I own a DFX and never dug coins this deep. Now you DFX owners don't load on me here,I'll be the first to admit that I aint learned how to run the DFX yet.But I can't imagine any machine being easier to learn & run than the MXT.... Just my humble opinion.

Being a fresh buried penney it has no halo around it like one which has been in the ground for awhile. The MXT has very good detection depth on coins and smaller non-ferrous items. Coins buried at a greater depth may come in as a faint whisper, listen for them for they will not register on the VDI at times.
When I receive a solid, faint whisper with no VDI reading I will go to relic mode and crank the gain up to +3 and double check. This pretty much helps me to determine ferrous or non-ferrous item. I most often dig it in any case. As you will learn the c/j setting has a little better depth detection in most cases.
