coins today. But this early in the year, I'll take em! 1893 Barber Quarter, 1910 Liberty Nickel, an old belt buckle and something that I haven't figured out yet. Anyway, I was running a 3 kHz coil on the X-70, hunting in all-metal, with 4 tones, max volume, max sensitivity and GB at 34. Lots of iron trash around the old homestead, giving me 5 or 6 low tones with each sweep. Kept my ears busy. But with 60 degree temps, it was sure nice to be out tectin'. HH Randy

Any day I get over 10 I feel like I've hit the lottery. And that green stuff in the background, is that astro-turf in your basement?

Those finds look like much more fun than work, I'd take'm any day.

Come on out and I'll show you some real sweet 10 & 11 ground! Full sens and dig 'em deep!

I'd be happy with a stinkin' Lincoln right about now. Good finds, I was wondering how good that that 3 kHz coil was. Some people said it was a bit chattery, but you always get that when you go deep. Ron

and it seems the more I use it, the more I like it. It is probably all in my head, but the iron targets seem to not be as pronounced with the 3 kHz coil. I am sure there is nothing scientific to either prove or disprove it. But I believe I am able to separate the other three tones from the low tone more distinctly with the 3 kHz than the other two frequencies. Especially compared to the 18.75. And, regardless of whether there is anything to it or not, if you have confidence in a piece of equipment, you will have more success. Or, maybe I should say the more success you have with a piece of equipment, the more confidence you will have in it! HH Randy

I tried the 3 kHz in an are that was producing large cents, injuns, some silver including a couple 1/2 Reales. There also was a fair amount of iron. The 3 kHz coil was screaming, the iron was enough to make hunting that area with that coil almost impossible. I just never used it again and stuck with the 7.5 DD. Could be I should have tried it in other areas.

Great finds Digger. And boy do you guys have some weird ground.
I cant ever remember seeing anything coming near 64 on the meter.
Most areas I hunt range from 15 to 40. Never seen 10 either.
The gold areas I hunt mostly sit around the mid teens to 30 and rollercoaster in readings every foot. Some places in patches stay put for a while, wish they all did.

If you are hunting in all metal mode, with identical settings for GB, sensitivity and audio volume settings for each coil, the 3 kHz concentric coil will not be any worse than the concentric 7.5 or the concentric 18.75. In fact, the 3 kHz will "scream" less than the other two, in iron infested ground. By design, it is less sensitive to ferrous targets and targets with lower levels of conductivity than the other two higher frequencies. Granted, there isn't much difference between 3 kHz and 7.5. But enough for me to recognize that the 3 kHz isn't as reactive to iron in my neck of the woods.

By the way, in reference to another post you made, my comments aren't based on "book talk", as you call it. They are my opinions, based on 35 years of practical experience, hunting the types of sites I hunt with a wide variety of detectors. HH Randy

Don't worry about the book talk thing. I wish I knew more about the sophisticated stuff.
As for time in the field, I understand your love for this hobby or you wouldn't be here chatting with me. Time in the field was meant for the X-Terra70. I know all detectors are basicly the same and with time enough with enough different machines you can come to a collective summery of a metal detecting device.
Each machine on the market has its own little quarks. only time with each one of these machines can give one a full understanding of that particular unit.

the place. My 10-11 is wet quartz sand on a Lake Michigan Beach. On an inland lake I hunt you can't manual GB the 70 it drops to 0 and the tones don't level out. Tracking mode runs around 27-30 there which I think is kind of a default for those conditions. Fields here run 14-15-16 and are only slightly mineralized according to MSU.
