I have read many post about Tesoros being "old technology", but if you detect for fun, it does't get much better than a Tesoro. I am not a "door knocker" so the older finds I make are an occassional wheat penny or newer silver coin from public parks, fairgrounds, and schools that I have been hunting for the last 17 years. My finds have dwindled every year, but I still love swinging a coil and hopefully finding that ring or silver coin or two. I usually have a Tesoro detector and as always, a Tesoro detector means fun. Recently, I got my hands on an older Tesoro, which is the original Bandido. I bought it to have fun and it seems that I am always surprised at the performance of a Tesoro. I have had every Tesoro made and this early 90's model, is just as good as any. I got the Bandido with winter already happening so I figured I would not have a chance to use it until spring. Friday the weather warmed up to 35 degrees and yesterday -today it got up in the mid forties. Out came the old Bandido with a seven inch Troy coil. Yesterday I hunted for 4 hours and the first two hours were spent getting use to the sounds and disc of the detector. I ended up with 25 coins, one of which was a 1954 silver roosie. All were from the surface to 6 inches. The disc on this detector is razor sharp and once I mastered finding a nickel, I was astounded how a slight movement of the dis knob, meant hearing the nickel or knocking it out. The silver dime was six inches deep and while digging it, I realized I was digging in someone elses old plug. I could see the outline of the plug and once I had the coin out of the hole, I lowered the disc and heard iron about three or four inches away. That is as good as any new detector could do. Today we had rain in the forecast so I stayed close to home. The school I hunted is really hunted hard and finding even ten clad coins in a couple of hours is doing good. I ended up with twenty coins with one being a wheat penny. It was 7 inches deep and a perfect tight signal with plenty of volume. I didn't find 6 silver coins and 30 wheats, but I had a blast. Having a blast is what this hobby is all about. Don't put too many expectations on your time in the field and have some fun. I am sure the "old Bandido" will provide me with tons of fun.
