I get my CTX 3030 in 2 weeks. Becides the user manual...

In 2 weeks I'll be heading to erie to pick up my CTX. I'm going to spend the day there with the family and you know I'll be swinging my new baby while there. Becides the user manual, what other reading material would you folks familiar with the CTX recommend? 30 minutes cycle time on a cnc lathe affords me some reading time  Also, am I able to upload Gonehunting's settings from my mobile phone or would it be better to use the stock programs at first?

You can't upload modes/settings from a mobile phone to the CTX. The CTX has to be connected to a Windows based puter, that has Exchange 2 on it. Download the modes to your computer, import into Exchange 2, connect the CTX to the computer, and drag the file over to the CTX. FWIW, I started with the basic coin mode and started using combined/ferrous-coin the next day.

This machine is simple IMO... this is my first real land unit and my first Minelab. I turned it on flipped through the settings like I have been using the machine for years. I am sure some people have difficulties but for me it is a quite simple machine and I LOVE IT to say the least!!! I hae not used GH program sbut I am sure they are nice I just modify the stock programs to my hunting site and off I go.GL and HH!!

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm sure GH programs work quite well for some. But, and I can't stress it enough...... the flexibility of the CTX 3030 allows each of us to "fine-tune" the detector to our sites, our hunting styles and our preferences. What works well for me in Iowa may not work well for someone in South Carolina. What works for GoneHunting in OK may not work as well for someone in New Jersey. There are simply too many variables between the sites we hunt, our personal preferences and our hunting styles. , Start out using the stock programs...get to know your detector..learn how targets respond to those settings. Then, when you have that figured out, try making some changes to the audio profiles or Separation modes. If you want to experiment, try GH programs....try some of the programs over on the Resource Center...... try everything. All I am saying is that IF you restrict yourself to a specific hunt mode and don't learn the functionality of your CTX 3030 and how it works for you at your sites, you're missing targets. Wish I could point you directly to just what you should read xentryx, but as a newbie, I don't quit have that knowledge. You are obviously experienced. But since no-one pointed you to anything, I'll try.

I would say go to Minelabs web site and go through their Knowledge Base to see what they have pertaining to the CTX. Watch their videos. Go to the CTX 3030 Resource Center here on this site and look through it. From this sites main page go to Minelab CTX 3030 Detecting Forum and on that page you will see the red banner near the top of the page for Resource Center.

Tons of valuable videos about the CTX on Yotube...

Harry, as I mentioned in the post before your post, I pointed xentryx to Gary Drayton's CTX book, it is a good book and goes more into depth of some of the CTX features and lots of tips as well. You should check it out.

The detector looks intimidating when you get it just use it .It's a lot easier to just start out in one of the modes and stick with it tell you get a good handle on it and then try another mode you well find one better than the other.with the first mode you choose you have the option to click and check target in another mode there by comparing both at the same time on the same target.Nobody knows what the detector well do where you are this well be up to you.You well find this out as you use it the more you use it the quicker you will find what works for you.sube

I appreciate all your replies. Gary Drayton's CTX book is surely on my agenda. I can almost say with without a doubt that the local beaches around here (fresh water) have NEVER been hit starting at around 1' of water or so. It will take me literally 2-3 years just to cover the ones in my area. As for dry land stuff, I'm going to re-sweep all the areas I hunted with my MTX.

I've been without a detector for 2 years. My girl's like "Oh babe, what's another 2 weeks?" It's so going to be a looooonnnggg 2 weeks....

Sorry Nolan. The post was so short I missed it. Short, but valuable I'm sure. And I will look into the book. I wasn't aware that there was a book geared toward the CTX. I do have Andy Sabisch's book on the Explorer and E-Track, figuring that much of the info on the E-Track would be similar.

Andy put a lot of effort into providing support documentation for the previous FBS products. And although there are some basic common elements between the operation of the E-TRAC and the CTX 3030 (Volume gain, limits, fast on/off, deep on/off, FE/CO TID configuration etc.), when it comes to "in the field" functionality, there are far more differences.............dual discrimination Patterns, flexible audio profiles, new separation modes, ground balance capabilities, target trace, various pinpoint options, user programmable pad, programmable tones, flexible FE and CO lines, GPS, Mapping, etc. etc. etc. If you already have the book, enjoy it for the series of detectorst it represents. But recognize it isn't going to help you get the most out of your CTX 3030. JMHO HH Randy

If your new to Minelab stay in stock coins program till you learn it. Gone Hunting program is AWESOME, but might confuse you.

I downloaded the manual on my phone...read it every chance I got...watched a lot of you tube videos and when I got my 3030 I felt very comfortable with it...its an awesome machine..this is just my two cents but I really like to hunt with a wide open screen so I can hear everyhing and you learn to cherry pick through the trash...the best of luck to you...

In the uk we operate with minimum disc but with ctx on auto sensitivity it runs very smoothly. Just give the machine a whirl, you will love it!
