I found this will detecting old barn from the 1760 it was under two horse shoes and i found several several buttons from the 1860,S. It still has a little dirt can anyone recommend how to save it from rusting out!!! ps to bad you guys down there getting the boot from the archies, A million bullets and artifacts in drawers will never see the light of day!! <img src="/metal/html/angry.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":mad">

have you read the post below!?
You may wanna HIDE that buckle before some legistrative idiot from VA sees it and comes knocking on your door with the police to arrest you and seize it (as private property) for the public treasury! According to them, that piece you have is probably worth 100s and 100s of dollars even though, it's encrusted with dirt, grit, etc. and you probably couldn't get more than $30 or $40 for it (if it were cleaned up AND ONLY if it's not broken)!
And don't mind or take in to account the time spent looking for it, the gas cost to get to wherever you found it, your effort in walking/searching and digging AND, the cost of your detector and all other cost associated with the hobby (inc. batteries, etc. etc.)!

If allowed/passed, this VA bill up for vote will surely be one step more/closer in the direction of communism in America. It won't be long after, that, more bills of the same nature will follow (state by state) as more and more archeaologist and legistrative idiots work together in out-lawing our hobby as we know it..
They plead to the courts with their over blown BS lying claims that "we" the general public/metal detectorist go out in the middle of the night onto "off limits land" such as historically marked Battle-fields, etc. etc. with trucks, shovels, lights, canvas covers, etc. and work thru-out the night under-cover DIGGING/STEALING relics and other items worth 100s and even 1000s of dollars BY THE TRUCK LOADS!! This is what is/has been claimed in VA by a few moral-less idiots that if accepted as claimed and the bill passes, will make it ILLEGAL to hunt with a metal detector on any state/fed land and on 'any' private lands with out permission. It further suggest that, you won't even be able to detect on YOUR OWN PROPERTY with a detector as they could confiscate YOUR PROPERTY claiming it as an archeaological site!
DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN IN YOUR STATE!!
DON'T SIT BACK THINKING THAT IT'S 'ONLY' THE PEOPLE IN VA THIS IS HAPPENING TO!
DON'T BLOW IT OFF LIKE IT ONLY HAPPENS TO OTHERS IN OTHER STATES!
DON'T IGNORE IT AS THOUGH JUST BECAUSE YOU COIN HUNT OR BEACH HUNT THAT IT WON'T EFFECT YOU OR YOUR STATE!

Nice find! If it is indeed a US belt plate, there will be nothing to rust. The "skin" (face) is made of stamped brass. It will be lead filled (back) with brass attachment hooks. However, if it is a US Cartridge Boxplate, the attachment hooks (loops) are usually make of iron wire, and they of course will rust if they are present. Usually, they are missing due to rusting away. Clean your plate with warm soapy water and a soft tooth brush. Do not use any type of cleaner or solvent. Just soap and water. A pic of the back will identify your plate as a box or belt plate.
