I found this in a farmfield in Northern Indiana

here's the "front."

This is the reverse.

This was ID'ed as a scabbard holder ca 1873. Here is a pic from a museum photo.

The guy who ID'ed it for me found this in his own searches. Check it out.

Here's his reverse.

Look at the "tube" of the scabbard of the museum pic. Just what is it a scabbard for? My friend informs me that US Army Officers sometimes carried an epe-type blade for dress occasions. I have never heard or seen that. Could this be a scabbard for the trefoil-type bayonet that 19th century soldiers used.

And finally can ANYONE tell me the significance of the "954?"
