The season started Sept. 1 and I almost missed it. I went out sangin (ginseng) this evening. I haven't went sangin since I left WV. 16 years ago. I haven't checked to see what it sells for now, I have sold it for over $200 a lbs. There wasn't much sang today, but the yellow root (golden seal) was plentiful. Yellow root is a potent medicine. We use it in the winter time for colds and sore throats.

What's the Goldenseal go for. Do you have any sassafras down there. We used to collect that bark for tea and it has medicinal qualities. Mother Nature has a lot of good stuff. Aspirin originally came from willow bark. When I was a kid we used to pick wild asparagus, wild onions, wild berries of all kinds, wild mushrooms ( loved those puppies ), and a real tasty melon that I can't remember the name of. Course during the DEpression you picked anything that was free. We used to go down to the train yard and pick up coal that fell off the coal cars to burn in our heating stove.

We pick the wild asparagus mid April. I like the moral mushrooms. I don't know the price of golden seal. The last time I sold any was back in 1991 and it sold for $50 a pound. That was selling it to a fur trader. He sold it to Nature's way back then. I had a book in 1991 where I could buy golden seal whole sell. What I sold for $50 was marked up to $150 a pound.

Is there any market for the mushrooms? Here they have actually had battles between mushroom pickers out in the forests as it is quite a business in this area. Lot of Orientals engage in it. Can't remember the name of the prized mushroom here but it brings big bucks from the fancy resturants. I love mushrooms but not enough to fight over.
