I was recently attending a Gun & Knife show at the SC State Fairgrounds when I came upon a booth featuring various metal detecting and gold mining gear and paraphernalia.
The fella operating the booth had several displays of his finds including some Civil War bullets and military buttons, some of which went back to Revolutionary times from the area around here.
Upon looking at the buttons a moment, I noticed that some of them shown quite brightly while others were deeply patinaed or only had remnants of gold remaining on their surfaces.
Pointing to the brighter buttons in the display I asked the proprietor why some looked so much better than others.
He, in turned asked me back, "Just what do you know about <EM><STRONG>gilt</STRONG></EM>?"
Pondering for a moment, I replied, "Well, I believe the Jews invented it and the Catholics perfected it."
I don't think he blinked for a good minute or so... <IMG SRC="/metal/html/blink.gif" BORDER=0 width=18 height=18 ALT="b~">
