I found my coolest find today!

I went to a local park today with the F70 and scored my coolest and oldest find to date. I was using the factory settings and my coil was over a target that rang up as a low quarter signal (80 VDI). I cut a plug and only three inches was this penny looking thing. I poured some of my water on it to clear the dirt and I wasn't sure as to what I had because I had never seen one of these before nor have I seen a pic or story from any other hunters from any of the forums, but I saw the date of 1864 and knew I had something special. I showed it to my friend and he took a guess as to what it was and then looked it up on Google and he was correct! I found a 1864 Civil War token! I am extremely stoked with this find!

For those of you that might be lucky enough to find one of these here is a link that will tell you all you might want to know about these things.

Called a die sinker...originally manufactured as advertising items but during the civil war they changed into something else.
A patriotic coin used as a coin but not a real coin.
Between the die makers and retailers they evolved a whole new economy based on these things.
Many kinds were manufactured by many different artists in both the north and the south, they seemed to have gotten around because this one was made in NYC and bruinvikes found it near Toledo Ohio.

I am surprised many more of these are not dug up but evidently pretty rare because I have never seen anything posted about one before and look on eBay and other auction and relic sites and see what they are selling for.
Not just asking...selling.

A great find, a bucket list item that was probably never added to anyone's list.

CongratZ....maybe a find of a lifetime!

John, I corrected your photos to show them off better below.

Bruinviles, that is definitely a cool find. Again another coin I've never seen or heard of. That coin has probably been laying in the ground for about 150 Years.

The detail on it is astounding considering how long it must have been there. Great find !

I've been blessed enough to find maybe 7-8 of them and I've never found two alike. I used to have a book on them that listed an amazing amount of varieties but I can't find it now that I need it. Most are dated 1863 and some are store advertisements. Great find there, wonder how many coils went over that before you dug?

Thanks everyone for the replies!

REVIER, thanks for the help with the research and also for magnifying the pics!

I'm on the road now, but in a few hours I will try to get more research on the token.

I wasn't able to find much but I am very shocked that the token isn't worth more money. I looked on EBay and the cheapest price that I found was $21.95 and the most expensive price was $150, keep in mind that these were the asking prices, but still.

Cool FInd. Neat part of history.

Nice find, here is one i got 4 years ago. I had the same reaction, what the heck?. I will have to find it to recheck but believe mine had no date. Could that make it non civil war era? CO

Made by the same artist, Charles D. Horter, has OUR ARMY on the back so I would say civil war die sinker also just a different kind.

Wondering if you ever got my message about the Casablanca ring you found?
Wondering if you still have it and if you might sell?
As I wrote before, depending on where you found it, I think it may be the ring I lost which belonged to my dad.
He was a Merchant Marine in WWII. He gave me that ring (his first sea voyage was to Casablanca).

I can be reached at gomesnyc@gmail.com. Or cell phone: 212-363-0112.

Thank you,

Rob
