I found a lockplate and a grapeshot at my latest site.

Can anyone tell me what rifle/musket this lockplate belongs on??? I sorta thought that it resembles an Enfield, but not exactly. If I remove the rust, will the lettering and numbering be removed as well.......or, is that y'alls experience when dealing with iron CW relics???? Thanks for any help on IDing the lockplate.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a CS - Austrian model M1854 infantry rifle lockplate, more popularly known as the Lorenz . Hope this helps. CCH

I would try the electrolisis process. It will not harm the base metal but will remove the scale and crust. I just did a butt plate that looked a lot like your piece and it turned out great. Nice finds by the way and thanks for posting. HH
