I found a few keepers from the 1836 farm

This afternoon I was on my way to rework some demo site's that I have been working for the past month or so. I was driving by a vacant farm that I have been tiring to get a hold of the person that is taking care of it to see if I could get permission to hunt it. When I went by their was somebody there working on the front steps so I stopped and gave him my song and dance. He wasn't the person that I was tiring to get a hold of, but he was another person that was in charge of this farm and he told me that I could MD it. Then he tells me that he does a little MD'ing himself and that he has gone over this yard a few times in the past. I asked him what kind of MD'er he has and he said the he has a Bounty Hunter. I didn't say anything to him, but I'm thinking " Sweeeet ", lol. He told me that he only found a pocket watch by the back door and some zinc canning lids and that was about all.

This yard is a mess. I think it has only been mowed a few times this year. The grass is so tall that it is laying over and their is a lot of weeds growing in it now. When I was MD'ing around back I noticed a building farther back that looked like it could of been a house, but then again it could of been something else and it had weeds up to my waist all the way a round it. I asked him about it and he said that it was the first house that was built in 1836 and then in 1909 they built the new house out closer to the road. Boy would I like to MD around the old, old house, but the weeds are way too tall. I was only able to MD the front yard and one of the side yards of the newer house " built in 1909 " because the weeds were way too tall in the rest of the yard. I did manged to find a 1916 Merc with no "D", a 1865 IH with a hole in it and 2 wheat's. If I ever drive by this place and see that it has been mowed you know that I am going to hit it again.

I have thought about taking a rake with me to clean some junk from under an old tree swing. You know? a bench swing style appears to been there. A guy could take a sithe and knock back the grass from the area you want to hunt. Might be worth the extra hour to get to hunt it before the caretaker does. I am going to rake the stuff out of the way when I get back to that spot. Mabey it would be over kill.

Just a thought

That's not a bad idea, but my little push mower can't handle all of the weeds and tall grass in that yard.

As far as raking the area under the swing i think that's a good idea, go for it.

Congrats on the coins and you know there are more goodies to come.

I have run into the same problems, tall grass and weeds. I just purchased a 33cc weed eater with the quick replacement heavy duty line. When I load my MD equipment for a hunt, the weed eater goes along for the ride..just in case. I also have a very sharp hand sickle for those taller weeds. Who knows...I might get permission to hunt only once or not get back before someone else comes along. HH TomB

Yeah I was thinking about the hand sickle, Only I used a sithe. you swing the thing like a golf club. As far as the weed eater goes every time my wife asks me to weed eat I reach for the MD. Easy mistake, I mean they do look remarkably similar.

I see old long-abandoned farm houses around my county that look like good potential sites --- except, not ony do they have high weeds around them but a lot of small saplings growing up around them that are too big in diameter for a weedeater to handle even with a brush blade. You would have to do a lot of clearing around them with a chainsaw, and a lot of dragging and stacking of brush, to even be able to swing a coil enough to be able to hunt them properly.

Yeah I would say there is a limit (it would be a very small limit for me). Unless you had that feeling...Course I have THAT feeling every time I go out... So I better never take the brush cutter. Holy Cats Man my wife would FREEK if she thought I was doing yard work on some abandonded property just to get to the ground to swing the coil.

ROFLMAO TURNMASTER...Guess I never looked at a MD like that. Sure gives me a nother prospective. LOLOL TomB

I kinda wish they would make one that looks like a Vacuum.
Jeff

If you think that's bad, you should see it how. I figured since it had a hole in it I would do a test clean with lime a way. I forgot about it, lol. Like for 5 hours, lol
If you leave it in Lime a way for too long it will eat copper, lol

That's to bad, Hate it when I space important things.

Soo, how does it treat nickels. Would you use it on an 1899 V. or a 1914 s buf.

My guess is yes on the 1899 but no to the buffalo

I hit the 1899 with a little mothers metal polish and it made it into a presentable coin, for me.

Jeff

I would say no to the Buff. You could give it a try with the V. Check it every 15 min's and when it gets to the point that it doesn't look too bad then you can use super fine #0000 steel wool and water. Just rub it lightly with the steel wool and water.
