My good friend offered me a ctx for a 1000 with a years warranty and a set of grey ghost underwater phones and a wireless module. I will need to know how to set this machine up for my relic hunting. Any advice would be helpful thanks.

Man, that is truly a good friend!

(I'm not much of a relic hunter, or I'd give you some tips, as well.)
:)

It certainly has a Relic mode, not sure how optimized it is for your area....almost sounds like TOO good of a deal, unless he's having a fire sale or is loaded and doesn't care. No matter the circumstances I feel that you won't be disappointed in its ability to just FIND STUFF.

I use combined, setting the 4 bins for the tones I want. I set the iron line at 25 wide open, second screen with just a bit of discrimination on the bottom line and some on top for wraparound. Generally run auto +3 but will switch to manual sensitivity when applicable. Run ferrous coin. This is my field setup and what I generally will use around standing old houses. Use a couple of modified coin setups for parks or other high trash areas.

Now our soil is normally not too minarealized and typically a clay based type of ground.

thanks for the tip,its a good friend of mine who is selling it to me hes just cutting me a good deal.

That is a great deal, I know you will like it. I am planning on getting a Deus first of the coming year. It is nice to have another quality machine to go over sites. CTTodd does that often and he finds things with the Deus he missed with the CTX and he finds things with the CTX that he missed with the Deus...different machines that respond a bit differently

Here are a few pics of my general setup, I show the one screen with the little bit of discrimination generally use it with no discrimination. Tone bins I set up but that is just personal preference. From this pic I think I moved the iron line a bit to 25 just based on your tolerance to hearing the iron grunts...lol!

I also changed to deep on and fast off.... Target trace and target trace pinpoint on. Pinpoint sizing and normal response. This seems to work for me...

Something I found out with usage for example....12-24 signal can be many things, a nice button, a fatty indian or Flying Eagle...it can also be a shotgun head stamp or part of a spoon or fork or something similar. Listen to the tone...you will get a good tone from a "round" object....something like a head stamp is quite often ragged so you will hear a good tone and a shift in tone when it the machine responds to the "ragged" edge...I call this a harmonic...it does the same with a spoon or fork or other items that are irregular in shape. Target trace seems to read not only the conductivity but the shape of the object, looking at the cursor you will see the red drip over on each side showing something a bit larger. Now a head stamp which is not damaged and is fairly flat will give a coin or button type response....just dig it....lol! You will need to swing slower probably than your Deus I see some videos of guys swing the Deus and it looks like they are whacking weeds....I know it is a fast machine but I still don't understand that super fast swing...lol!

Excellent info Bell. After all I've heard and seen with the Deus it is tempting to have an opportunity to have both it and the CTX as Calabash does. I know a guy who has a Deus but is NOT likely to let me borrow it,just a little puckered that way...

Calabash...do you have the "grande" version of the Deus or the basic pack? Can a guy get away with just the basic lower priced pack or is it selling the unit short by not going all out?

Without the main control module you are only getting a portion of the adjustments. I think the "Lite" version was designed as a cheaper way to get a second Deus where you could do the actual complete programming with the main module from another detector. It would be nice to buy the CTX without the GPS feature for $400 dollars less as well since so few actually use it,,,,,,same idea but the main control module for the Deus is more than just a feature.

If cost is a big concern , get the Deus without either headset option and plug you own headsets into the main control module,,,,that's what I would consider the basic unit.

it sells the unit short, I have the full setup they can be had for around 1240.00 if you shop around I stumbled on that deal after I bought mine. He had the right idea about the module and just bypassing the wireless headphones that would work very well if money is a concern but I wonder what would be the best deal on a setup like that since the whole setup can be had for a little over 1200.00

thanks for the pics it seems like chinese arithmatic at this point , got to go thru the whole leaning curve but I know it will be worth it,

Ok got the screen gonna give it another shot today thanks

Well I think that the CTX is a great addition to an arsenal. The two machines compliment each other and shine in different ways. The main thing when going back and forth between them is sweep speed it is worlds apart. The Deus set at Reactivity 1 is blazing fast compared to the CTX. If you want targets especially deep targets you must remember to slow down your sweep speed. That is the best tip I can give you as a difference between them. I hunt the CTX with no Discrimination. I do this to help with adjacent targets. There is a lag time between targets with all Minelab land machines when discrimination is used.
There is a "null" or loss of sound when a target in the discriminated area of the screen is encountered. After the target is passed over the sound of threshold or another target will come back but the process takes time. In that time you are detecting blind or I should say deaf because the screen will show you both targets but you have to be looking at it. The CTX is supposed to sound off for the good target if there are two to choose from but I like to hear them all and my shovel and I become the discrimination.

Without complicating everything for a newbie to the ctx you could simply select "relic" mode! You may not like the "smooth" audio but it's simple to edit it to normal or long.

Im not that type of hunter just select relic mode it wouldnt make me happy! thanks though im one of those types. Thanks Todd I seen your programs in Andys book will give it a whirl.
