How is this for a find?? I dug it today at the old canel here in Fort Wayne. Actually its just east of fort wayne. Its a site I asked about last year and I went back 3 weeks ago and asked the owner. He didnt mind as long as I filled my holes and let him see what I found. he siad he didnt think i would find much of anything. The site is the old canel bed both coins were about 11 inches down. Both of them were about 25 feet apart when I found them. I bearly got the coin chime on both of them and the cent chimed in as a 1$. So naturally I figured it was gong to be junk. There is a spot on the 50c that is from some tar gunk that was stuck to it.

WOW I finally hit something some find huh? What do you think?

ok ill have to get the cent pic up later i can get the dumb thing to size down to be small enough to fit in here so here is the other

Hi, Which Garret are you using? Ron B.

Ok more about the spot, seeing as how I got a call from work not to go in because of the major computer problems we are having yesterday and still today. Cant run the machines with out computers. You have to love computer ran forming machines.
Anyhow the spot is and old lock masters house with a turn around pond/impoundment. The banks are only small humps maybe a foot high. At this point the area is now a farm field so its been well plowed. the land owner said he dosent think the site has ever been detected in the time he has owned the site, and thats been 50 years now. The locks are long gone and so is the lock masters house. he has no information on the site other then it was a lock an masters house there.
My guess is the 50c came in later from one of the previous land or house owners. The large cent 1853 was from during the use of the wabash erie canal. There arnt many spots where the orignal canal site is noticable because it was back filled or used to dump junk once the canal was abandoned. there is a section from Outside New Haven indiana into ohio where the canal has now become a stream used to drain the farm fields. Through Fort Wayne the canal is now covered mostly by a rail road viaduct and buried under god knows how many feet of dirt and what ever was dumped into and on it. My plan is to go back there this weekend. When he is home in the mean time i got some fishing to do i got the next 4 days off.
