I Finally Found a War Nickel!

MNetrac

New member
I got out for a few hours this morning and finally found a war nickel. I have really wanted to find one but the coin has eluded me until today! I was getting a lot of high tones on the etrac and was mostly ignoring nickel signals today - only dug one clad nickel other than the war nickel. Not sure why I even dug this one - I got a 12-15/12-16, which is a bit higher than my normal nickel signal (11/11, 11/12), but I decided to dig it anyway. Lucky for me I did, only a few inches down and I popped out a war nickel. It's in rough shape, but I was just excited to finally find one!

Also got a 52 rosie and 8 wheat pennies.

I found one a couple days ago and it registered 12-17 in the ground and out. Was my first war nickel of year so it was a pleasant surprise.

I have NEVER...EVER...dug a war nickel at 12-12.....they are ALWAYS higher like 12-16 for me, always! congrats!

A couple weeks ago I got a V at 12/16 and today a war nickel - I am going to start digging them all the time now!

Please define the war nickel for me.

Thanks

42,43,44 I believe maybe 45? (haven't found one) they come out of the ground silver in appearance( 30-40% silver I believe) they will have a mint mark above the building on the reverse, a P or a S may be more but that's also all I have seen.
someone with more coin knowledge will chime in with more details.

Exactly. They were produced from mid-1942 through 1945. They are 35% silver and feature a large mint mark above Monticello's dome on the reverse - P, D and S.

Nice finds, and a good video as well, congrats, a war nickel is on my list for this year, have not found one yet.

I have found many and they do come in at a higher reading, but they sound like silver to me.....NGE

Congrats on the War nickle. Found my first yesterday (1943S) after a year with the E-Trac. Mine read 10-17 12-17 was down about 6". I have dug many targets with that reading but this is the first one that was a War nickle. Nice to finally get one. Rick IL

Congratulations on your first War Nickel! Thanks for taking us along on your hunt.

Well Done:clapping:

At least you were able to identify your War Nickel, I found several before I knew what it was!

Congrats on the War nickel. Found my second one last evening (1943P). Got a 12-13 signal on it. My first one had a 12-16 signal. The first was less worn and had less tarnish than the second. Don't know if that made a difference in the signal.
