I failed the buried gold depth test

A friend had a small white gold ring(3 gms maybe) and buried it in the sand 6" to see if I could hear it......Nope..... depressing.....Had the 15 wot, wish I had the 10" with to try it.......In your opinions, would I have heard it w/ the 10"????? I could just barely hear it in all metal, but switch to disc and nothing.....

With the ring laying on the sand I could get it at 5-6", but not buried...

I hate the thought of hunting in all metal, either I'd never leave a 20 sq ft area, or wear out my switch switching back and forth........

The good news is at least I know the low gold sound everyone talks about......Sounds like nice foil...

My friend had a tiger shark w/ about a 6-7" coil and he got it fine......

cover more ground-lose sensitivity.... Trade offs in everything i guess.......

evet thou the excal dont like freshly baried things i'm sure the 10" would have hit it

i hunt in all metal always, you will not wear out the switch, i here deeper signals in all metel, then switch, if iron move on

the WOT is a sensitive coil but it is larger and therefore more affected by the ground your searching. make sure and play around with your volume control, sens control and threshold control to try and coax the most out of your detector. Also, make sure your using 0 disc and 0 notch.

Also it helps to learn your all metal mode as youve found out, its part of the detector so why not spend some time using it.

as far as freshly buried targets go, alot of beach finds are in soft sand and are recent drops......and found at good depths.

you also could use Doc's inline amp to bring out those whisper signals

Sometimes to much sensitivity can hurt you. Try dropping your sensitivity without losing your threshold and you may find a surprise as far as depth in the dry sand. Some people may disagree but try it. That is why the knobs are on there. HH :minelab:

Ive found sweep speed plays a part in depth as well. Hershey1 is right too much sensitivity is about as bad as too little. I think Erickk runs something like 4 sensitivity on his Xcal w/WOT. You have to keep your coin on the deck as well like most BBS/FBS they dont seem to like air space between the coil and sand.

I've upgraded my Excalibur II with the Mel Parker / OldBeechnut remote pin point / discriminate switch. That one mod alone makes the Excalibur way better to use. BTW...you won't wear out the switch anytime soon. But the remote switch makes using the Excalibur easier as I don't have to drop my scoop to switch over. Using one arm and hand to use the Excalibur is so sweet. Switching back and forth is effortless. I highly recommend doing that mod.

All metal is the way to hunt in my opinion. The Excalibur exhibits PI properties when in all metal and I've seen on the beach way deeper target finding in all metal as compared to discriminate.

My Excal has the WOT hard wired and it is a killer. But, you have to adjust it correctly to make it work.

Freshly buried targets are hard to get much depth on them if you cover them up, but if you would have put it in a hole and not covered it up you probably would have heard it. This is what happened to me when I had my Shadow X5 as I buried a dime to see what depth I could get and my dime at 5 inches and got nothing so I dug it back up and there was no iron in the hole or anything else, so I put it in the hole and not covered it and it had a good signal. Now when I put the dirt back in the signal was gone. Called Troy up to see what he had to say and he told me this is normal on freshly buried coins as all detector do this to some extent . In real life hunting I got dimes at 12 inches deep in real life, but could not when digging a hole and putting a coin in it and covering it.
From experience you will see this and get some great depth on item such as this, but you also may have to swing the coil slower to hear those small weaker signals.

I agree with Finderskeeper,

For beach wet sand detecting, All-metal is best for getting a bit more depth and more sensitivity on the deeper smaller finds. Plus, Sometimes you can tell if the signal is a hair-pin in all-metal so you're not always switching back and forth to check the target..

Run your sens at about 3 O'clock and scrub the coil and then try it s- l -o- w- l- y

I recently dug a .07 gr gold at over 1 scoop (8 inch SunSpot) (in the water)

I just got a (used) Excal 1000 which my husband sent back to ML to have refurbished. We just got it back & I've joined this site to find out more. I've read MANY posts saying something like this. Where can I find out more about this?

Thanks for any help you can give!
