I dug up an 1893 nickel. It looks like it is encased in concrete.

At first I couldn't tell what it was. It looked like a concrete disk the size of a nickel. It isn't concrete, but it seems like it. I have been soaking it in hot peroxide for two days now. I have got half of it off. Any suggestions?

John, There isn't much you can do when you get the concrete like dirt bonded to the metal. I have had the same thing on old copper. I don't think peroxide will work on it, but you never know. Electrolysis works really well on nickel.

One method I used on an IH penny that worked surprisingly well was a tablespoon of lime juice , and a tablespoon of salt in an 8 ounce glass of water. Just keep an eye on it cause it is very corrosive, but it will get the concrete off.

If you replace the Lime Juice with rum , and replace the salt with sugar, add some seltzer and a few mint leaves, you have one heck of a Mojita!! Enjoy!!!

This is the best condition you will ever find a liberty nickel. A guy on another forum posted nice looking ones he claims he dug up, but I think he is FOS. You don't even dig up Jefferson nickels looking like his!
