I can upload pictures but when I try to get them into the 120 mb range they are terribble, I have 2 hp photosmarts. maybe I am getting too close or just not a good camera for this? I am trying to take pictures of rings and such.here is an example of what I am trying to resize

Not sure exactly what your problem is? And do you really mean 120 Mbs?

The image you posted is extremely low resolution ... 37kb and 163 x 243 pixels. If you are trying to enlarge this for printing you will not get very good results. However, if you have a high resolution image of say 1,000 or 2,000 pixels by 1,000 or 2,000 pixels you should have no trouble resizing for posting to the internet or for printing and getting decent results.

What software are you using to resize and/or print with?

We might be able to help if we could get additional information???

one is too old ? one has 3.5 mp on it ? not good enough ? Next I will try my daughters has 5.0 mp on it. I'm thinking mp's are too small to start with. what kind of mp's are satisfactory to downsize and still get a good picture???

Your picture looks okay to me although it's hard to tell at that resolution. At least it seems to be fairly sharp as the problem with many closeups is that they are often out of focus somewhat.

Three or more megapixels should be more than enough but your picture is extremely small ... either you cropped a very small portion of your original image or you didn't use the full resolution available on your camera???

Can you post the original just as it came out of your camera? Does it have a macro mode?

Here's a couple of cropped pics from a 3 and a 5 mp camera just to show you what I mean:
