I don't fully understand.

I am hoping that the shinier bulbs out there can help one a little dimmer like myself. So If I am running Pro Zero and simply turn off the Iron Audio does this affect depth in any way ? I want to run this machine to the max. wide open in a field. But I have some serious iron trash patches in there and it sounds like mother ship communication in ''Close Encounters of the third kind'', with all that iron tone. Also...... Notching out. Does notching out (eliminating) reduce depth or does it just make me miss that narrow specific metallic signature, as it should ? Is all of this based on the signal being cut out from being relayed to the speaker\headphones ? Thanks.

I have found on "notch machines" there is no loss of depth. This should answer both questions. FYI: Discrimination was designed for a reason. If your getting too many iron hits then add some disc. No need to listen to all that crap.

I'm no guru. I hunt with iron audio off,if encountering an interesting iffy target, turn it on to check that target, then back off(listen to the front edge and trailing edge of the signal). I think its possible for iron disc to affect depth but only at the extreme edge of detection. When an object is detected thats disc(notched) out the signal isnot blocked, but rather the audio is turned off (the target still registers on the display).

Thanks. I did some google fu before asking these questions but these answers are clearing some of it up.

I would say starting out run the iron disc 35 to 40. Iron audio off until you get an iffy target. Pro mode. Get a good ground balance and start swinging.

That's pretty much what I was doing in the really iron infested spots. I guess that I was concerned about depth loss when descriminating out the iron. And or masking.

Iron infested sites are not for the squeemish. I mean this is not the place to start out hunting. Plus once you know your machine it's not so much about depth in these sites as it is with separation of targets. Picking goodies from iron takes some practice and usually a small coil to boot. We could go on and on about different ways of doing this. But I would start in cleaner sites and learn the machine. Then go back to these iron infested sites.

Ya, this is my first season with the ATP and I won't pretend that I know all the best moves with it. :) I worked a fairly reliable (if the time is put in) field with it this spring and pulled out some more old silvers and large cents. Old cuff links etc. I was running most of the time in Standard Zero. I think that I was comfortable with the familiarity of the bell tone from my old ACE. I have also stayed out of the trashiest part of the field because I kind of trained myself to stay away. Although I have found old jewelry and a German Nazi era coin there. So now that I've been using the machine since spring with various settings I'll go for the more clipped, tiny or subtle high tones between the junk. I also have a tendency to ignore the mid tones. Actually I am notorious for this out in that field. On town boulevards I usually run Pro Zero one bar down on sens. and Iron Audio off, usually. So if turning Iron Audio off only affects the speaker and not depth I guess it's all good. Been looking at the crop forecasts and only 5% of the wheat is off. Late seeding here due to a late spring and too much moisture.

Very trashy areas can be very confusing. You will most likely have more questions. I have been using my ATP for 8 months and still run into new things. Like having the ATP be very chattery, then suddenly quit and be just as quiet on the spot it was just chattery. Detecting large amounts of iron and trash and then having the ATP go silent over a spot, to find nothing but red dirt in the ground. Completely decayed iron.

Thank you all for your help\comments. One of the main reasons for getting the ATP was the multi toned aspect to help me differentiate finds. Motorcycle accidents in my youth caught up to me later. I have degenrative arthritis in my three lower vertebra meaning almost no cartilage there. I have had times were I couldn't stand and had to urinate into an ice cream pail on my hands and knees, with wave after wave of continuous Charley Horses flowing through my upper thigh. There's more but you get the picture. I can only take so much time and bending out there. I totaly love metal detecting but the bod puts certain limits on my enthusiasm. So a multi toned machine with features like the ATP is important to me to help differentiate targets as I just can't take digging too much trash. I think that I pretty much have my last questions answered now and I appreciate everyones help.

There is no reason you cannot disc out everything fron zinc down. Just dig the higher percentage tones. Heck, I do this myself especially when I'l running out of time, tired or cherry picking.

Good luck and take care of yourself. I have some physical limitations and this is why I do 95% of my detecting in the water. With a scoop, you don't have to bend over and get up and down or squat and while I can manage an hour or two on land, I can handle 5-6 hours in the water. HH.

Thanks. I tried a bit of water hunting this year, found clad, fish hooks, weights, a silver dime black as midnight etc. Oh Ya ! A freakin old school double sided razer blade. The lake went into heavy algae bloom and I didn't bother again. I had a homemade scoop that more or less worked. Now that i've had a taste of it, I may get a serious scoop.
