I did something simple that is helping my shoulder.

I'm glad you made the change to a shorter rod length. I have metal eyelets in some of my shoes but it's not a problem. I've preached the merits of "comfortable searching" for many a year. Having used models way back when the coils were in a fixed position, you didn't have any rod length adjustment (and they were too long), the control housings were big and heavy, and it called for a lot of strain on the wrist, elbow, shoulder, neck and back to operate them, I can't tell you how great it is to own and use current detectors that are light, handy, and able to be adjusted for a comfortable position.

Most manuals suggest adjusting the rod so the coil is swept about 18"

thats a fackt i found that when the coil is way in front of me i get a sore back , but if i keep it close im ok always somthing to learn

You mean you don't want to go back to the good old days of the "bread box" detectors and the hub cap coils Monte? Remember Gardiner's 36-inch coil?

I run close to my feet, otherwise the arm stretched out to yonder won't last as long. And full steel toe - steel shank - metal eyelets are a no no.
Then the lighter Tesoro's does allow me to work outward tho for a wider sweep and much longer detecting time compared to some other machines I have.
And best not to allow a loose coil wire flop around down near the coil.
